Last night in lieu of anything worth watching on the goggle box (while waiting for the tides which are meant to be very big this week) I started re-reading "Off Watch with Old Harry" a copy of which had been lurking on my bookshelves for many years.
This caught my eye ........ Many men seem to assume a sort of instinctive knowledge where electrics are concerned, a gift inherited from a host of shadowy ancestors rooting lethally in the cupboard under the stairs. .............The hydrometer is his badge of office. Resembling some part of a comic doctor sketch .......... according to this the ships company mourns or rejoices, uses the light in the heads, or thuds and curses it's way in total darkness.
finally .......... the description of the battery ...... antlered with crocodile clips like the stag at bay .......
Since the advent of the BSS some of these scenes are no longer with us on the Inland waterways .......but let me assure you they are still alive and well in many of the creeks and channels of the East Coast !!!
