I've always wondered about this (sad I know)
If one were to register a boat which had never been on the cut before with an incorrect length or beam (in order to manipulate the license or mooring cost) would there ever be a situation where CRT would demand an independent measurement?
People must have done it I would have thought.

The EA marched round our club checking licences and measuring boats they suspected of being borderline length wise.
My mate was bumped up to the next tariff for to the couple of inches his bow roller sticks out. Not happy would be a massive understatement!

I know someone who had his boat lengthened by 10ft and forgot to notify BW for 4 years........ That's one of the situations I was thinking about. I don't remember the bss examiner checking the length of the boat. I suppose if you had a 70 footer and said it was 60ft there may be a raised eyebrow.

I know someone who had his boat lengthened by 10ft and forgot to notify BW for 4 years........ I know of someone who had his rather nice 1off widebeam barge lenghtened by 10ft3" in 2005, and who was prepared at the time to pay quite a chunk more than it would have costed if he'd used the standard size plate which was only 6" shorter, but he got what he wanted, and if money is no object why not.
The photos he posted about the lenghtening job were quite impressive, he sold his barge a couple of years ago.
He's back on a narrowboat now, but I think (maybe wrongly) that he's living in a house now.
You don't happen to know this guy loddon, do you ?

He didn't moor his vessel at Bourne end near Hemel Hempstead by any chance did he? If anyone can find him I would be interested to know who lengthened his boat.

I meant Parglena.
I had bad experience with P&S on a steelwork job many years ago so had been a bit put off. I didn't realise they were competent for lengthening works.

On "Parglena" they did a good job, as that's what Julian said about their work at the time.
He may come back with some additional info maybe.

I also know someone who did this, and failed to notify CRT. I suppose technically it's fraud but in reality I guess if CRT became aware they would just up the licence fee. I doubt they would go to the trouble of finding out when it was done and attempt to charge the difference for the time the longer length wasn't declared.

Peter. It was indeed done AT P&S Marine but mainly by Roger Farringdon (sp) along with John and Derek All the interior fitting was done by me with some help from a local woodworker. Still on the NB but only during the week PM with an emailn if you want more info and photos. Parglena was in Staines last time I heard. Julian

Julian If most of the work on "Parglena" was done by Roger Farrington, it must have been good, he for sure knows his job.
I remember that you wrote at the time that you did the interior fitting.
I quite liked the easy way your boat was build, that made it easier to come much closer to the bank than a straight chined hull.
Thanks a lot for your offer of more photos, I saved almost all the photos of her that you'd posted at the time, and still watch these from time to time, specially when it's getting a bit too cold or too wet to do any work outside, and I feel like building a new boat, which sadly isn't likely to happen in a hurry.(for in a hurry read ever).
You may have understood by now that I'm a barge-and boat freak.
Peter.

Passed it at staines this summer.
Makes sense that most of the steelwork was done by Roger Farrington - I was a bit surprised that Derek and John at P&S would be able to tackle the job.
I'm vaguely interested in getting my own barge stretched so casting round for some ideas. I can do the internal bit.
I had been told by someone else that Roger Farrington was probably the best person about for this job.
