Never owned a model railway apart from a few feet of HO test track and loco when I was trying to develop a realistic controller for a friend who was a dedicated "nut" This was in the 70's when most of the controllers were pretty dire. I built a phase angle thyristor controller. The prototype had an odd 50Hz jerkiness so I used fullwave to give 100Hz which was a lot better but I wasn't happy with it. I started to experiment with generating higher frequencies and using PWM control but in the end made a batch of the 100Hz ones for my friend to shut up the "are we nearly there yet" type complaints. I suspect that I was heading in the right direction although I was starting to get problems with the loco "singing" at an audible pitch. Without the ag from my friend I lost interest and eventually gave away/threw out the railway bits and pieces. ............ I was far more interested in motorbikes
