Since moving onto my present narrowboat, the cratch has always leaked horrendously through the stitching, it was originally double stitched but the thread has disintegrated on the secondary stitching. The previous owner pointed this out as an issue before I purchased, even going as far as saying that it has always leaked since the day he bought it from New from Wilson's... Well. . . With the rainy season upon us, I'm planning on making an improvised cover from Linen and bitumen Paint or perhaps rubberised roofing paint over a former. Has any of you lot tried this? And if so.....any advice!

I'd be wiping it over with thinners and then sticking some Duck tape on it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I ended up having a nerdy evening watching you tube videos on Vinyl welding and suchlike. . Was quite impressed with HH-66 adhesive!

Thanks for people's replies regarding my original post. .
BUT.... My intention is not to seal up the stitching as a permanent cure as the cratch was inherently badly designed with much of the stitching on the roof and it naturally collects water as it travels over the edge, it's also 8 1/2 foot long and made of several pieces of vinyl. My intention is... To make a new lid! That for now would go over the existing Cratch, but later I wish to make solid sides that I can remove in the summer! The current plan is to form a curved top of 4.5mm marine ply with a 2 inch lip then glue over with linen and paint over with rubberised bitumen paint...oh also want to incorporate a hatch either side.
