I read a comment on another thread about 'raging capitalism' and the thought struck me that the secular Christmas festival is exactly what we collectively make it.
As I've mentioned previously, I've been wearing a Christmas jumper at work since Guy Fawkes night, and have been force fed Christmas music for the last two weeks, and obscure Christmas films on tv.
In conversation, everyone I have discussed this with believes the trimmings and music should be held back until 1st December, even if you wish to do shopping earlier.
So if we all agree, why are retailers and local authorities not listening?
Or is the truth of the matter that we all, quite literally 'buy' into it.
Surely capitalism can only rage if we participate.

Rog We are simply. brainwashed from birth to believe it's 'normal'. Look at the billions which are piled into marketing each year. Combined with that and the fact we are pretty simple creatures at heart, we haven't got a chance. Opting out is dealt with by guilt trips which have also been sewn into us from birth. All I want for Christmas (well every day really) is time with my friends and family. That doesn't lead to profit though...

When I were a lad we put the tree up on Christmas Eve and took it down on 12th night. That's how it should be but I know that come early December, all our neighbours will have their trees up glowing in the bay windows.

That's how it should be but I know that come early December, all our neighbours will have their trees up glowing in the bay windows. Spot on. Trimming up at home (probably because it entailed making a lot of them out of crepe paper) was never done until after school had broken up which was around the weekend before christmas. The decorations began to be removed, bit by bit, after boxing day, so that they were all gone by 12th night. It sometimes appears to me that the more we have the less we appreciate. Rog
