Fanny will pull you further than gunpowder will blow you * * As seen below on all road signs displaying 'County of Northamptonshire' I can usually keep up with your demented sense of humor humour (bloody foreign language), but I have to admit this one grew wings and sailed right over my head.

However I am never sure on 5th November if we are celebrating the attempt or the failure. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_TreshamJust think - if only you Americans had paid your taxes, all this History would be yours

Just goes to show, offer to help at your peril. You should help people with the expectation of receiving nothing in return, just that you know that you have made the effort and have helped put the world to rights a bit more. Sometimes help should be offered at the end of a barge pole. If nothing else, MissMax has greatly entertained a few hundred people (readers of the forums) so I don't think anyone has anything to complain about. One of the best threads ever on Canalworld, say I. Now that folks are aware of her, nothing wrong with checking that things are OK with her and still lending a hand if required. Yes She certainly is 10/10 for content.. My experience with people here in UK?, they are inherently suspicious of someone 'offering to help': ie; what are your intentions? why are you wanting to help? not to accept it for what it is, just a gesture of goodwill. Thats how I was brought up, offer help if I can. Then once you have helped, it becomes 'England expects' every time they call you (and thats the only reason why they call) or the result is flounces like our Lady in question. Unfortunately, having helped a lot of people through work or community in the 20 years I've lived here, I can confirm I have been screwed over more often than not, due to my stupid generosity and upbringing. Using someone seems second nature in this country. IMHO of course. Once offered freely, now I'm just wary. I hope she comes good, comes over to TB and gets herself sorted.

She certainly seems to give as well as she gets. She would probably fit in well here, and have a lot of fun doing it.

As to flatdog's very good comment above, I like to help if I can without being too creepy. Not entirely altruistic, my attitude is that if I put some effort in somehow somewhere, then when I need help it's not so embarrassing to ask for it. Swings & roundabouts. I do not like to do work when someone is standing there and saying 'do this, do that', especially if it's a horrible tedious and miserable job such as dragging trees through the forest, I much prefer to just get on with it myself, put a few hours in, and am happy just for a small 'thanks' and no fuss. MissMax's boat looks interesting from the photos she has posted, I have the urge to dwell in her engine room and clean it all up and re-paint it; I like the silver colour - nice and bright. It looks like a case of a boat that has been a good one in the past, like ours is/was, and needs a 'good thorough going through' - ideally I'd see a team from the two forums descend on her boat for a few days and sort it all out for her at their expense. That would be nice, but just a dream I guess. On the other hand, if it's now all been painted over in bitumen... is it worth the effort at all? (I'm still working me way through that thread!)

I suppose it's the difference between language in the north and the south, but whenever a female describes her underwear as "trolleys" I always imagine them to be large and commodious.

I have never heard of anybody painting the whole boat in bitumin, Is it a done thing? Only in Skipton. And only if your name is Max. ....and only if your name is Ahole and thought it was funny and/or clever to pretend the boat you sold years ago was moored where it wasn't and you (and your b chums) harassed someone to the point they cancelled work booked in the marina you had never been in?
Lived out here? On your own?
but I have and I'm too savvy to believe a millicrap whatsit of the shite posters like you spread.
