or whatever their "proper" name is... I know they're frowned upon but with ferrules, are they "allowed" with the bss chap? - I can't see why not but if they're a defo no no, please someone let me know before I get too carried away on Ellis.

Interesting question. I don't think a bss man (or woman) would be closely checking this as it would take too long. I have found quite a nice alternative to screw type connectors is Wago connectors but not sure if the bs likes them either. Would be interested to know on both counts

Would be interested to know on both counts I have used Wago connectors and find them very good. I can not think of any specific reason why they would be disallowed, though I do know wire nuts are not liked and for good reason. These are much better than choc blocks and some places sell then singly if you don't want many. For those that don't know them this is what a 5 way looks like- www.screwfix.com/p/5-way-lever-connector-222-series-pack-of-40/38224The BSS man has never seen mine as they are neatly tucked away, not hidden just not on display.

Why are they called Choc blocks / boxes.
Is it a Chocolate Box thing? If so I do not really understand the relevance.

I think it is because of the resemblance to the smaller chocolate bars which are moulded as a row of blocks you can separate. it's like several standard use items that get a nickname which catches on, to the extent that it becomes the standard name. another one is "zebedee" for sprung channel nuts .... named after the character in the magic roundabout ....... because of the spring on the bottom

I think that must just be the boxes because I have been using barrier strip connectors (choc blocks) for longer than there has been more than one channel on the television

I'm no BSS expert but I would have thought that if they are fixed down and the wires supported and protected from shorting then there isn't anything wrong with chocolate blocks per say, it comes down to how you use them.

Sorry for my irreverent response, but I knew the 'grown ups' would be along in a minute.
Hope the wrist is still feeling the benefit of the injection.

What do you want to use them for out of interest? SO far, I've used them to joint 2 bits of cable together in the electric cupboard that connect the smartgauge to the batteries and another couple in the engine compartment to connect the inline fuse holder for the solar charger to the batteries

the little boxes are a good idea (and very cheap) as it makes it very easy to fix to a bulkhead (even if only with a dab of sikaflex) you don't want to let them dangle they are not a mechanical connection they are an electrical connection and shouldn't just depend on the wire for support.
