Hi all first off all best for tomorrow night I am going to look into the dreaded wooden boat ownership, yes folk will say i am barmy and i agree . I see some cracking wooden boats around, now just thinking mind you, but I wonder about owning one A project will likely be the one sought after. There fore it will need work doing, within reason of my capabilities as a joiner though. I have no worries on doing any work needed and it is a good way to learn more by getting stuck in. I understand there is a lot of upkeep to them and ways around making life easier and longer lasting like GRP sheathing etc. Can anybody point me to a good read on repairs to wooden boats and maintenance. Internet would be better than books as my eyes are not much cop for books. Once again all best and bring on 2017, looking forward to new ventures

CarlT is you man, he did post on here for a while but seems to have stopped again. Is he on CWF or is he banned? He is on there and not banned AFAIK, but he wasnt posting on there either (at least when I last was a few weeks ago). You could post on there and see if he sees it. Or send him a DM through this site.

Have you discussed this with T? Have you discussed this with your psychiatrist? (If you haven't got one don't worry you will have soon)

The bits on my GRP boat that give me the biggest headache are the wooden bits Thank god the bit that keeps the wet outside is not made of it!

Wooden boats are lovely - as long as they are someone else's!

Being serious, I like wooden boats but I don't have the time to restore or look after one, my steel one takes most of my energy/money and fortunately the little GRP one does not require the same amount of continuous maintenance that a wooden one does so I can just about manage to keep on top of things. Having seen the time and effort you managed to put into your last project, I suspect this will prove to be within your capabilities. I have very limited experience with wooden boats but my mate with the Gaffer is pretty knowledgeable, and a good carpenter so if you get stuck for an answer I will ask him for you. A Happy New Year to You and T and a great 2017 for projects

Respect for taking on a wooden boat, just a word of caution..... on the Broads they have a saying which goes thus. "The last thing you do to a boat before it dies is clad it with fibreglass" Phil

I wouldn't want a wooden boat myself, but if your into working wood it might suit you. It's all the caulking that would do my head in. Well that and the cost of buying good seasoned wood. That boat on eBay with the twin gardners, could be a good buy it's sheathed in copper.

I am far from getting a boat, be nice to get another but T will have me sectioned, as John mentions.
At the minute a matter of interest in the workings will do. I have found a wooden boat web site that is good reading up to now.

Helped with caulking a narrowboat in the past and appreciate the time it takes but I doubt that I would take one on of my own. Most of these are better suited to small consortium's where the skills can be shared. The upkeep of any wooden boat is both continuous and expensive and of course the steaming and bending of new planks although a pleasure to watch (and assist) is time consuming in its own right.
