Was out with the wife on Saturday and whilst in Newmarket we dropped some stuff off at the local 'Open Door' charity superstore. Debbie wanted a look round and I was going to sit in the car as I hate shopping, but, I ended up going in reluctantly and ended up looking at their selection of non-fiction books. They didn't have the biggest selection, but in amongst the cookin and gardening books I found two inland waterways gems, Tales From The Old Inland Waterways by Euan Corrie and Britains Canal & River Craft by E.Paget Tomlinson. It's only over the last couple of years the the historical side of the inland waterways has gotten a hold of me and for £4 these two books have been a worthwhile purchase. I don't know if these books are well known, but I've found both very good. Will now keep my eyes peeled for more bargains to improve my historical knowledge.

Result! Oxfam in Oundle always used to be good for a bargain book, they jacked the prices up to near WH Smith levels so I've given up on em. www.abebooks.co.uk/Lots of bargains on here, also Amazon can yield some excellent cheap secondhand books.

I love charity shops. So does the other half. Whenever we go out anywhere together like out boating or a trip to rhe coast we always seek out the charity shops. All my clothes other than pants n socks came from the "bin shops" as some people call them. Most of the children's clothes as well. Charity shops - excellent

The ebay effect. I've been going to charity shops for my clothes for about 25 years now. Ebay has definitely had an effect on the prices. Second hand pair of Levi 501s can get about £15 on ebay. They used to be regularly found in charity shops for about a fiver but now going up towards ebay resale values. Oxfam sell some of their more valuable stuff on ebay or in "boutique" shops to get more ££ Understandable in a way.

Have you come across Emmaus? www.emmaus.org.uk/find_shopThe prices at their Carlton (Bedfordshire) shop were ridiculously cheap, crept up as the staff got more clued up with what they were selling though! Larkboy, there's one on the A10 at Landbeach - the café's are normally pretty good too

Yes we have a local Emmaus. They are great. I picked up a pair of Paul Smith jeans my size (32/34) for £7.50 a couple of months ago. They are nackered now as i just get a pair of jeans and wear them till they wear out. Currently on a month old pair of Levi 501s which need replacing asap..

I love a good charity shop mooch wherever we fetch up on the boat.I've even found 2 clearance shops where everything is 99p 😮.You probably think that they must be selling manky stuff, but it actually works the other way in that good stuff which was priced too high in the ordinary charity shops finds its way there.I've had brand new stuff with labels( including a pair of curtains),2 cashmere jumpers & a very nice leather handbag. 😊

In one of my former lives, my occupation required an evening jacket for "workwear". I used to buy from charity shops. The majority of people buy an evening jacket to wear for a special occasion. They hang it up carefully until the next special occasion and then find it won't button up, having shrunk over the years in the wardrobe. Bought some very expensive label jackets for very little money, always had a spare or two (including white ones). Often had to spend more money on the (new) dress shirts than on the jackets

lovely charity shop in Wells. only the best stuff on offer. I once bought an unmarked and probably unworn Drizabone three quarter length coat there for £20, cost new about £190.
if me and the missus go for a drive and stop in a country town for a cuppa, we ignore the usual high street shops and delve into the charity shops, apart from the obvious attraction of bargains, where else can you get such an eclectic selection of goods all under one roof (Milletts apart)?
it's much more fun to find something that you didn't know you wanted than to search in vain for something that you know you want.
