CRT say "The canals are so full that there are no available moorings at all and boats are having to keep moving continuously."
Hmmm.

There's more just now. "It's a myth that you can live on a boat without a permanent mooring".
They're really going for it this morning.

Possibly a bit of CRT propaganda designed to deter wannabe London liveaboards?

Radio 5 It's stuff being quoted by the news reader - "CRT say blah blah". Different quotes each news time (half past the hour?). Each item also has a quick interview with a different boater.
They are also pushing that it's making things difficult for the "traditional" boater who they paint as being an original working boater in a historic craft as if the canals are still much used trading routes!

The crux of one interview with an Aussie woman on a CRT residential mooring in London was it's not a cheap way of life and thinking you can buy a £10k boat and live in London for free was fantasy.

If its referring to London then I woulf say two things about it. Its bullshit (currently) As suggested it sounds like crt attempting to close the stable door after the horse has bolted. If boat numbers on the towpath in London continue to grow as they have done over the last two or three years then it will get completely gridlocked. It virtually is already. I've got a feeling once the "problem" gets into the general public conscience this will be the point where things change. In a big way. Just my theories - others are available

But you can 6% of boats in London are unlicensed. Not everyone's cup of tea but it is doable. And a lot easier if you pay crt £500 a year which is still cheap for London !!

Its blatantly a cheap lifestyle option compared with London rents !
Anyone who denies that either has a very low IQ or an agenda or assumes everyone must have mains electric to survive.

I don't think many people on benefits would choose living on a boat over a council flat or house. It's certainly not a good choice to bring up a modern family. It takes a certain special (or mad) person to take on that lifestyle...I should know!

Living on a canal boat in London is a hipsters dream they most certainly have other accomodation options available. Its not about necessity really for a lot of people. I know what you mean about being a certain type of person (I've been living on boats since 1994 with no land dwelling option at all). I did take a mooring when I had children 6 years ago but am myself gradually returning to the towpath now. Its not a comparison with council flats its a completely different demographic. Mind you it would work quite well to sublet the council flat and get a cheap boat knowing you can kick out the tenants whenever you like.
