With the current situation in London it makes a lot of sense to buy a flat, let it for ££££s while you slum it on a boat (overstay if you like it doesn't matter if you have a flat as well to go back to) let the rent money pay for the mortgage. If it gets awkward to live on the cut then just bugger off back to the flat.

If its referring to London then I woulf say two things about it. Its bullshit (currently) As suggested it sounds like crt attempting to close the stable door after the horse has bolted. If boat numbers on the towpath in London continue to grow as they have done over the last two or three years then it will get completely gridlocked. It virtually is already. I've got a feeling once the "problem" gets into the general public conscience this will be the point where things change. In a big way. Just my theories - others are available the Mayor should introduce a congestion charge.

One thing about dirt cheap canal boats is they don't have modern clean engines.

People are talking about council housing as if there is any available. It's also really easy to make an old engine cleaner, run it on a kerosene/veg oil mix altering the mix during the year.

What I'm worried about is that CRT are trying to fix a localised problem with a national solution. I should also say that this area is a prime spot in London. There are many areas which aren't so busy. If the licence fee is hiked up for ALL CC'ers and/or live aboards, or more restrictions are placed on us, I think that would be a little unfair (not that fairness seems to come into it).

Agreed it's a localised problem (parts of London, Bath etc) but I tend to agree with Jenlyn in that the problem has already run away. I struggle to see a solution that doesn't include allowing people to moor but at least get money from them.

Tower hamlets (east London) has approximately 10 applicants for each council property. Definitely not enough. I wonder if the kero/veg thing would pass emissions tests?

On the news items I heard, none of the CRT quotes mentioned London, but all the boaters interviewed were in London.

I wonder if the kero/veg thing would pass emissions tests? yes Doesn't it damage the pump seals with older injection pumps tho? And potentially glaze the bores? Having said that I did run a Renault 19 on raw veg oil and a glug of white spirit. Ran a bit hotter, pinked a tad too, but otherwise fine.

What about Nox?? that is what is getting people all agitated about diesel in the city?? I think it could get interesting if boats became classed as vehicles and had their wngines and maybe even their heating systems tested for emmissions. Obviously boats on residential moorings would be treated like houses (smokeless coal allowed etc) but cruising boats who knows? I know boats are a tiny part of the pollution problem in real life but pollution legislation -might- be a way to limit the numbers of boats being used as accomodation on the towpath? Probably not.

What about Nox?? that is what is getting people all agitated about diesel in the city?? What about living next to a linier chip shop? I suspect that wouldn't please them much.

Actually burning hydrogen isn't too bad. But I think we are along way from hydrogen powered boats.
