Little sis n i discussing age related ailments t'other day....we both decided this could be our last year of mammoth challenges..she's cycling across Denmark and Lands End to John o Groats...I'm not because I don't chose to, I'm not keen on cycling, but I am doing a 100 k walk/run with her over a weekend. TBH I don't think my stamina up to it..lost lot of fitness this year, the renovation of this miners cottage has really taken my health. I've worked for nearly 3 years on this place doing all the rip out, hacking down 2 overgrown gardens, lugging so much soil etc and paid a price. However inside I'm still young though I ache, some evenings I hobble cos the physical labour has been to much. I dont mind photos..i don't see myself as old, not ready to go grey..though little sis now embracing that trend. Every year i put those little photo books together with verse account of my year for grandchildren and i ensure they have pics of me. I'm considering now seriously selling the cottage next year and moving into flat near a Marina...miss boat so much and I'm struggling with lugging coal and cutting grass...cannot get lawn mower to start...I'm not finished living, the challenges will alter to stuff not quite so exhausting....

60 now. I was a bit depressed when I hit 40. 50 wasn't so bad, and 60 passed with barely a murmur of self pity - just a frenzy to get my free bus pass so I could get "something for nothing". Bottom line is we are all going to die fairly soon, so best to make the most if what life you have left. You only get one chance.

It seems to me, that the older I get, the happier I get.
By the time I reach 80 I reckon I'll collapse and die of acute ecstasy.

Well, that's it, off at 6.55 and 9am at our destination, boat voyage over, completed successfully. Now 25 hours to pack, and tidy the boat, and change engine oil. Quite pleased with our efforts. Burnt 2 sacks of coal in 6 days; who cares about fossil fuels and pollution when the wind takes it all to Russia, eh?

Radio 2
I'm getting old I'm in despair
I've found my first grey pubic hair
I'm fast asleep by half past 10
I'm never gonna see my teens again.
It won't be long until I'm gone
When father time will have won
My pipe and slippers wait for me
It's, bingo, crib and cups of tea.
I'm wearing beige, and a cardigan
The musics hell on radio one
I just think about vapour rubs
Saga magazines, and bowling clubs.
I want to live till I'm 99
Where's it gone, this life of mine
How can it be, that at 43
I think of retirement beside the sea.
The downward spiral has begun
The musics hell on radio one
The only thing, that's left to do
Is to tune my dial to radio two.

Filled to top with diesel and had a go at counting/measuring, as it was filled up at start of trip. Never done this before with our engine/boat. We get the result 0.59 litres/driving hour. That's for a 10hp one cylinder. 20 hours driving and 11.77 litres.

I'm impressed you can get that to two decimal places !!
Its a Bukh unit you've got in there isn't it? Lovely engine. Or was it a Sabb? They are also lovely. A small one lunger like that is a joy.

By comparison we get 1 gallon to every 3.5 hours cruising = 1.3L per hour, that's on rivers at 5.5 MPH+ (5 knots depth dependent) flat out we do a smidge under 8 MPH (just over 7 Knots) no idea what the consumption is per hour at that speed as our speed limit is 7 MPH and most places are too shallow to achieve it anyway! 4 cylinders 35 hp.

Not directly related to other topics but I've felt lately that I am now ageing very fast. I'm a little over 40 so just above average age for the uk population apparently. Not very old really. I just find that I feel I am getting old really fast now. It could be related to having two small children (4.8 and 6.8 y.o.) who are growing incredibly quickly. Due to vanity problems (I hate mirrors) I take pictures of myself now and then to check the status. Am I too young to be worried about this sort of shit. Should I get some of these button up cardies and just wear them and get on with it. A right geriatric coffin dodgin' nipper then !!

It's a Bukh DV10 wot we have. Now we have our first measurement, remind us in June to have another go from full tank to full tank. We have a long journey from Nantwich to Selby then, so could count the driving hours more accurately.
