Both Parkes Tug's Sulzer and Leo were purchased by James Monk's who disposed of both Gardner engines one ending up in Burscough 2 which is now on the River Shannon in Southern Ireland. The hulls of both tugs were described as ripe so I imagine they were both scrapped. So I don't think this is the same 'Leo' you referred to. I don't think so either Roy, the guy that named his tug that was known on the Thames as "LEO" "LEONTYNE" because the Registry didn't want it to become boat N°10 to be named "LEO". His "Leo" was 30' x 9' and drew 4'. In the Netherlands you're free to name your boat as you like, and because of that many barges carry the same name "Risico" "De Hoop" (the Hope) and "Linquenda" are a few examples of names you'll often see. Peter.

Hello Roy, sorry i haven't put an update about MEDLOCK A41 on here recently but I will shortly. I'm booked into a boat yard for some work on the bow cabin top this at the end of sep said I wanted to ask you some questions if that's alright. If I'm correct in thinking the A class boats had two bollards to a side on the bow? And how wide where the side decks 14inch or 16inch. I'm hoping to get rid the of the horrible pointy bits off the cabin top and reinstate the bollards. Regards Kris

If you look on Page 1 and Page 5 of this thread you will see some good photos of A 40 showing the decks (my guess is 16 inches) and there are good photos of the bollard configuration of both bow and stern. A 40 has just been dry docked in South of France for bottom blacking and painting. I bet it was rather warm during that heat wave. Best wishes to you Roy

Lovely thread, interesting history I’m looking to connect with owners of L&L short boats that are restored or have original hold with covers to look like a load. I’m visiting the UK this October and would like to visit as many boats as possible, I have an Irish Grand canal company barge in original condition with 1928 bolinder and would like to learn how others maintain theirs, and also how they have covered the hold space to keep it usable, dry, but looking original

Ribble is owned by a lovely couple who I'm sure would oblige by showing you around. Unfortunately I can't remember their names and have no contact details. By the way, have you any photos of your boat you could post to let us have a look? Ps Kennet would be worth a look at as well as it looks like it's just under cover, but in fact it has a hard top.

There are one or two L&L boats in the Wood Hall Heward workboat fleet. I think CLITHEROE is still unconverted Picture from WHH website. Boats based near Rickmansworth GU south. yes but they don't have covers, it's boats that are unconverted but have covers that they where asking about. Do read what's posted.

Thanks for the link to your boat, lovely boat you've got there. Some very nice photos. I particularly like the images of it on the canal in Dublin. As far as I know Ribble is somewhere burscough way on the L&L. I believe Severn is on the weaver somewhere. There are pictures of it on its mooring in this thread somewhere.

I don't have either names or address that I can give you, but there is a Leeds & Liverpool Shortboat called 'Farnworth' which has been converted with a cabin over the hold which has roughly the same profile as the cloths/sheets she was equipped with back in the days when she was still at work. As far as I know she's down in the London area being lived on, and I think there are some posts about her way back somewhere in this thread that I made about when I worked her up in the North West on docks traffics for the Manchester Ship Canal Co.
