"Pearson's canal guide mentions the Peckforton Hills, a range I am unfamiliar with. Here's a snap from the train from Nantwich to Chester, after Wrenbury: these hills are a sandstone ridge running northeast-southwest in the county of Cheshire between Crewe and Chester. The high points are Stanner Nab 200m towards the northern end of the ridge, Peckforton Point 203m, and Bulkeley Hill 224m at the south end. The Sandstone Trail long-distance footpath runs along the ridge, and the hills are the source of the river Weaver. To the south of the Peckforton Hills lies Bickerton Hill, also of red sandstone."
Here's a Youtube video I found about these hills: This is very close to my home and I frequently walk my dogs in the area. For anybody using the Shropshire Union wanting to explore the hills on foot the Sandstone Trail, mentioned by Foxy, crosses the canal at Whartons Lock and the hills are only perhaps a half hour walk away past Beeston castle.
