That's done it. There'll be no living with her now. Glad you have your lad with you. If it could be worse, it would be on your own. Rog It's good to have him here but he's of a fairly nervous disposition and was getting very frightened at times so I feel a bit bad subjecting him to it, especially as every other trip we have done has been trouble free... I'm hoping it doesn't put him off.

Hope you've got wellies, just keep hacking away at it. You'll get it off. Got no wellies, but there's a hardware shop not far away so I might be able to get some there, and a hacksaw, I don't think I could hacksaw it through the weed hatch but might be able to do it from outside.

Forget wellies, you're gonna get wet anyway, an old pair of trainers will do - it's just that the mud might suck you in. Reminds me of the old joke about the similarity between wellington boots and George Michael, the answer being that they both get sucked off in bogs. I think some publicity about the dire state of this section of canal might be helpful, although I'm still quite confident that we can get the mattress off by going through the next lock and draining the very short pound and attacking it from without. We need a full sized hacksaw which we don't have, but there's an old fashioned hardware store half a mile away.

Should I send an e-mail to those papers? Must be getting dark by now in Manchester... what lock are you at (number)? (and not wishing to make a bigger mess of things...!)

Should I send an e-mail to those papers? Must be getting dark by now in Manchester... what lock are you at (number)? (and not wishing to make a bigger mess of things...!) We're at lock 68, I'd certainly be prepared to have a chat with a journalist and pose for "Daily Mail Sad Face" type photos in the hope of shaming local folk into not disposing of old mattresses, bicycles, shopping trolleys etc into their canal. I must say though that the overwhelming majority of people we have spoken to have been thoroughly decent and helpful people who have sympathised with our plight (which is apparently the same as for many other boaters), offered us food and water etc, and so although the state of the Rochdale canal here is pretty disgusting, I'd set my face like flint against any suggestion that average local folk are inherently bad here compared to any other urban area.

Message sent to Oldham Chronicle (they only provide message box, no e-mail address) - and e-mail sent to Manchester Evening News. Shave and comb your hair ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) (they might send someone around tomorrow in daylight. or not.) (I'll stay away for another hour to see if they reply to me - we're 2 hours ahead, remember).

I'd still phone to the Fire Service anyway - if they can pull cats out of trees, I think helping a stranded boat gets included in that sort of thing.

And you should write a fair and balanced account of the RCR experience. We've just paid our latest subscription in the belief that they would help out somehow if we got stuck.
Just looked: Morrisons (Failsworth) opening hours 0700 - 2200
