No reply so far from either newspaper. They don't seem very 'on the ball'.

I feel for you. I'm half tempted to round up some tools and drive up and help as I've just gained a day off tomorrow but I don't think the missus would be pleased.
It's a long round trip though. There must be someone nearby with some decent tools.

I said earlier that it would be a mistake to say that Mancunians are fundamentally bad people. About an hour ago a man out walking his Scottie dog stopped for a chat and I told him about our problems and what we intended to do. He said "I've got a spare hacksaw in my shed, I'll drop it off later". Five minutes ago he re-appeared with the hacksaw and two new blades. I offered to return it to him afterwards and he said "No, don't worry about it". I'm fairly confident we will be sorted out tomorrow.

Well, I'm off to bed now to dream about driving buses. Those are the best dreams I hope I don't have any dreams about being attacked by mattresses!

And you should write a fair and balanced account of the RCR experience. We've just paid our latest subscription in the belief that they would help out somehow if we got stuck. I will say that I won't be renewing my RCR membership. As soon as I saw the "engineer" I said to my son "he won't be able to do anything". He was enormously obese, so much so that he couldn't even get into the weed hatch. He made a very half-hearted attempt to pull the mattress off with a pickaxe, then gave up. He was with us for maybe 20 minutes, but RCR have told me that we have used up the two hours' labour which comes with our policy and we are now on our own.

I see an email being fired off asking how twenty minutes of doing nothing equals using up your two hour allowance. One thing i will say is when it's needed our fellow citizens will do what's needed to help. That's great news about the hacksaw. There are some amazing people out there.

All I can add is that my worst ever day living on a boat was better than my best ever day living in a house.

Coming from an age before RCR and the like, I have always considered myself as having to be self reliant when on a boat. Yes there are some specialist fields and tools where I would be in doodoo on my own but generally I have always expected to manage. I'm quite sure that now you have come down to your own resources, you will manage. (Although I bet a battery angle grinder will be on your xmas wish list ) I'm sorry that I am too far away to be of any help but I hope you can get it sorted soon.

Update at 0800 UK-time: No replies to my messages to The Manchester Evening News & Oldham Chronicle.
Not knowing the exact details here, but that seems like very sloppy service from RCR and I would consider asking for my subscription back. I find it hard to believe that the RCR 'engineer' would just abandon you like that.

Sending someone incapable due to physique makes it clear their only interest was to tick a box and keep your subs. That's rip off Britain for you.
