ah stop moaning, the lot of you! walking to the pub and then having to walk back again (un-inebriated) is good for your health and good for your pocket. Ha !!! ..... in Keadby it was a long walk to the only shop (still in existence). That did have an offie but its stock was limited to "Super" "Whitelightning" and an unrecognised brand of vodka .......... and the rest of the stuff on sale was of the same ilk ....... and yes I walked home again unencumbered by alcohol (or anything else) to a meal of tinned pie, tinned peas and dehydrated potato washed down by tea Five of us got stuck a few years ago [5 boats lots of people] they closed the railway bridge for repairs but didnt tell us it was going to happen! In the end a mate brought his 16 seater Limo across from Rotherham and we all went to Bawtry to China Rose for Bevs special birthdasy! According to Pete I saved his life, 48 hours in Keadby with nowhere to go was tantamount to death!!!!

One of our nicklesons dates from '82 and the rest from the '90s. All sorts of fun, no village shops, no pubs... Ahh progress

Actually.... before I head back to this kind of scenery (see pic).... I'll mention this site. My sister thought I could start a course a few weeks ago, and now I'm on my second course. It's all free (you don't need to purchase a certificate): www.futurelearn.com/Free?...where is the catch?....

Apart from trying to get you to sign up so you can get a certificate in whatever and then bullshite forums with your expertise in a given subject ... Looks good for someone just wanting to learn a bit about a subject that they are interested in, as long as the 'pupil' accepts that this doesn't make them an expert on the subject.

I did the 'Earth in your Pocket' course and am on the 'Extinctions' course. It seems to me to be a good way to have a look at the subject, perhaps refreshing your memory if you've studied this kind of thing before. There have been plenty of new facts for me, and plenty of ideas as to how you can continue self-study along various lines. The certificate they try to sell you is probably entirely worthless - who will such certificates impress? They have no official academic/State education value.
Comments from participants can be made, but there seems to be no personal-messaging system, and I don't know what they're like if you try to give your e-mail out. Links to items of interest seem to be allowed.
I haven't explored what's on offer. It only takes a moment to join, and it's free so long as you're not tempted to buy anything.
My motto is: If it bites, kick it!

Foxy - just to clarify. My comments were not aimed at you they were aimed at some people who do consider this type of study and certificate to make them 'experts' (I don't include you here).

I need to update my maps. Moored at North Kilworth, says two pubs, ones know a house the other a fecking over priced eating hole. Rant over. Petrol station next door, I'll grab some beers and a Ginster and fuck off back to me boat. whinge whinge! You know where you've got it wrong, completely wrong? You thought, mistakenly, that you were here to be happy. Nah!

Foxy - just to clarify. My comments were not aimed at you they were aimed at some people who do consider this type of study and certificate to make them 'experts' (I don't include you here). I hadn't thought you had, and agree with your statement. However, the more you study and learn, indeed the more expert you become. I actually made a snide remark a couple of evenings ago as three 'experts' were wheeled out in videos, and they just kept saying "they don't know". And I thought they mumbled a lot. I said something along the lines of "if you know nothing at all, I suppose that makes you an expert in knowing nothing". I did go back yesterday and alter it radically, as I have already had one 'moderator warning' about my avatar (me with beard and axe, which I changed to a fox. honestly, these University types have no sense of humour). This latest 'course' is about the five great extinctions that have occurred: 443 mya (million years ago) at the end of the Ordovician, 373 mya at end of Devonian, the end of Permian extinction 252 mya in which 90% of marine species died out and 70% of reptiles on land snuffed it. Then there's the end of Triassic extinction 208 mya, and the end of the Cretaceous 65 mya which is when the dinosaurs got struck on the head by a large meteorite. I thought some of the courses might interest some here on Thunderboat. To be educated is to be liberated!

On the subject of education, I caught glimpses of this TV programme yesterday evening, it looked interesting and I see that YLE (Finland's BBC) does have it saved in their 'Arena' collection. I don't know if the link works for Thunderboaters in Britain and those in South America, let me know. The programme can probably be found on YouTube or the BBC's website also. It concerns the painter/artist William Dobson, born 1611 London, died 1646 London. He became the Royalist portraits painter and captures the atmosphere of the English Civil War. Endymion Porter 26:15 - 30:32 is shown, he's a relation of mine (I've been in contact with one of Endymion's descendents whilst conducting family tree research on my mum's side). Endymion is related to the Blacks and Morrisons of Tullynessle, near Alford, Aberdeenshire. areena.yle.fi/1-3413835 Endymion Porter by William Dobson Charles 1st by William Dobson
