Reminds me, we moored at the bottom of Atherstone locks once and set off to walk to a pub at Grendon, marked in our Nicholsons. Long walk, but no pub! Most annoying. Enjoy your ginsters Rog

It's really a bugger when that happens. When I was going down the Trent a couple of years ago, I arrived at Keadby and got through the lock, desperate for a meal and a beer. (I had been looking forward to it all the way down the tideway, in the Nicholsons it said two pubs ) They were right ........ but one was closed down ......... and the other a burnt out shell

On 9th april 2010 I proceeded with a friend (him driving the boat me winding the locks) from cassio bridge lock to grove lock on the GU. Took us from 6am to about 10.50pm. There is a pub by Grove Lock. They said they were closing Having done 50 Grand Union locks in a single day (my highest number ever) one does want a pub to be open !!! Unforgettable day that was. Fortunately the vessel skipper had emergency beer rations in the fridge 2 days after that my first daughter was born - 2 weeks early !

My fear is that it is only going to get worse. The days of the good old British pub are numbered, as are mine, and I'll be happy to die away with them!

My fear is that it is only going to get worse. The days of the good old British pub are numbered, as are mine, and I'll be happy to die away with them! Around 25 pubs a week closing at the moment I believe. The smoking ban, the huge difference in price between pub and supermarket beer prices, and opportunities for housing development are the reasons, I would guess.

ah stop moaning, the lot of you!
walking to the pub and then having to walk back again (un-inebriated) is good for your health and good for your pocket.

Ha !!! ..... in Keadby it was a long walk to the only shop (still in existence). That did have an offie but its stock was limited to "Super" "Whitelightning" and an unrecognised brand of vodka .......... and the rest of the stuff on sale was of the same ilk ....... and yes I walked home again unencumbered by alcohol (or anything else) to a meal of tinned pie, tinned peas and dehydrated potato washed down by tea

Some of them were wiped out by Tesco's during the Great Sludge War, some can still be found on Thunderboat...

Actually.... before I head back to this kind of scenery (see pic).... I'll mention this site. My sister thought I could start a course a few weeks ago, and now I'm on my second course. It's all free (you don't need to purchase a certificate): www.futurelearn.com/ Kattilakoski, Väli-Kannus - that's what it looks like at the moment.
