Or a train to Harlow, walk along the River Stort to Roydon, train back to London. You can also do Bishop's Stortford to Harlow/Sawbridgeworth.

If your visiting the Tower or Tower Bridge then dont forget you can also spend some brass visiting the Shard which is about £30 on the day £25 in advance plus lots of places to spend your money when you get to floor 72. If you run out of things to do in the smoke then how about a trip on the high speed train from St.Pancras to Chatham. 39 mins and about £20 return. Then visit the Historic Dockyard. Walk up the hill to Brompton village and sample the vast range of Whiskey at the King George V then onto the Royal Engineers Museum, then back down the hill to Fort Amhurst before getting your train back to Town, Or taking a walk down Rochester High street to the Cathedral and the Castle. or A day trip to Portsmouth for the Historic Dockyard HMS Victory and all that. About £35 quid return from Waterloo. If you pop down to pompey there's a fort in southsea that's free and we've just come back from the armouries museum on the hill in fort Nelson. Another free day out. But I do recommend the historic dockyard. It's amazing that HMS victory is still the flagship of the First Sea Lord and is the world's oldest naval ship still in commission. The HMS warrior was the first steel clad armoured warship but never fired a shot in anger. The Mary rose is a interesting story. I hate Portsmouth but go to the docklamds a lot. The navy days are great, as a child my dad got us behind the scenes and got to go on the bridge of the HMS invincible and the HMS are royal and meet the captain's. Still to this day I don't know how but was great as a kid to skips the queues and have a full tour with an officer.

I know it wont help. We've just come back from portchester castle, we visited using our new English Heritage membership, we are also national trust members after visiting dunem Massey hall and little Moreton hall.
I've just sent off for my two free tickets to shreks adventure in London.
I only just realised that when we go to London for that we can go visit lots of houses and places with our membership for free. It will be too late to report back which ones were worth going to.
But I'm excited now, might even treat the kids to an overnight stay and make a weekend of it.
