Apparently they fill the channel between the island and the towpath, drive the crane over then unfill the channel. Let's hope they remove all of the fill, because it's shallow enough there already. There's also a lot of underwater debris in that channel. So they might dredge it at the same time.

Why does it take 2 weeks to dismantle a crane? It's not a priority to do the job quickly. CRT will close a canal for two months over the Winter to replace a pair of lock gates, when canals were commercial operations the job would be done in a weekend and at a time when cranes as we know them hadn't even been invented.

Nothing to do with CRT tho. This particular closure was meant to be in March as well, but due to the floods the other year they are a little behind. its this crane that gets moved across the canal that's to the left.

I subscribed to notifications for canals oop north and my god, the Aire and Calder gets reams of closure notifications almost every day. It gives the impression that if you dared you'd be diddling along between closures for years to get along it.

As I have no immediate plans to go there I don't pay them much attention past seeing most refer to the towpath, I was being naughty.
