This one has incorporated a one metre length of pipe lagging for some strategic reason. Maybe it scares swans.

There mustbe a load of blue coot nests somewhere near me

Coots are my favourite bird, we had one which would come on deck and feed from my hand, she was so tame that I was lucky enough to be allowed to sit with her and watch her eggs hatch, very privileged indeed,

I tied a car wheel (with inflated tyre) beside my barge. They make excellent nest bases as they float well and stay level.

I'm glad to see it has been adopted.

Some of these coot nests are just rubbish !

Good work, but weren't you tempted to throw it a few twigs and weed the rubbish out while it wasn't looking? It was probably hatched in a similar pile of crap and thinks that's the way it's done!

I like seeing them make nests out of manmade materials. Plastic might be more insulating than twigs so it might improve the survival rate.

The mother coot was away when I rowed past the nest. 3 eggs. Just enough for a sandwich.
