I just lit the fire as its a bit nippy. I usually use normal firelighter blocks and kindling.
Has anyone tried the gel BBQ stuff ?
Any other techniques.

BBQ stuff may not be as effective as it is designed to light charcoal which is a very different beast to solid fuel we burn on our stoves Phil

Its just this time of year it is not kept in 24/7 so requires more lighting. Never tried to light the fire with just firelighter and smokeless briquettes.

Meths. Never fails. There ya go - says 'suitable for heating'. Not too much or you'll get the Stargate phenomenon.

Anyone remember the old gas fire pokers? Now they did make getting a fire going easy.

Used teabags dried out and soaked in diesel. Would unused ones work? I've heard of it before but the soaking and storing seems to me to be a bit of a smelly job. Does one keep a small tin of diesel and dip the tea bags in it just before lighting? I have used old socks doused with cooking oil before but it was not amazing.

I don't drink tea but when tea drinkers are aboard I dry out tea bags and keep them in a Chinese takeaway food container in which I pour a little diesel. Putting the lid back on prevents any smell, leakage etc. Also Chinese takeaway containers are great for changing gearbox oil as the oil can be drained into one, then with the lid replaced it can be lifted out sideways if space is restricted with no spillage.
