Just read about the latest catastrophic IT failure. BA this time. It got me thinking about our reliance on IT and the other countries who have stakes in it (known and unknown). Thatchers dream of us all becoming managers of the world and getting others to do our dirty work, is back firing on us. We seem to be losing control of our IT systems. The countries who make stuff for us can do their own management now and what's worse is that they can now manipulate our economy and security through IT weaknesses. We need to start making our own stuff again. We also need to reduce our reliance on IT and do stuff manually where possible. Sent on my iPhone....lol.

400 Euros for a delay of 3 hours or more on a EU to EU flight. I once flew into Casablanca whilst on a bit of a whirlwind tour of the Atlas mountains. Well my luggage got lost on route and due to timescales of my planned itinerary my plans had to change significantly. Swiss Air did me proud though -compensation (without me asking) covered the complete cost of the holiday plus I got put up free of charge in a hotel noted for it's piano bar. Who needs the EU when the Swiss are around!

SAS into London City Airport, arrived early evening, from Frankfurt (on Lufthansa) December 2012, my luggage left at Frankfurt, to come in on next morning's first flight. I was given a 'night bag' which was surprisingly comprehensive and I still have some of the items it contained. I already had accommodation arranged in Holland Park, London, and next morning had a good opportunity to swing by LCY to pick up my rucksack rather than have it delivered. I still like flying with SAS, still seems like a professional airline apart from the fact that they too stopped the 'free' meals a few years ago. Their planes are quite ancient and make the real aeroplane noises. Finnair again in a weeks' time - all you get for free is a cup of 'tea' and bilberry juice that is Made in Estonia (by cheap Estonian labour, of course). In praise of Finnair, their pilots are usually out of Finland's air force and seem very competent; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Finnair.

Technology averse some of us may be but you can't take it away from the people that develop some of the systems like speech recognition, it's very clever.
Personally (like today when I had several of my late mother in law's bills to pay) I would rather have the call answered in seconds and the bill paid sorted in a couple of minutes using an automated system as a preference to hanging on for ages only to be put through to a call centre on the other side of the world where a combination of poor call quality and very poor English means it's a much bigger hassle.
I love technology.

Again, condemning the outsourcing of UK jobs to inferior foreign workers is something you have condemned me as a "racist" for bringing up in the past, so I'm amazed at this Damascene conversion. I suppose a person's views are likely to change when they get first-hand experience of a situation.

I am not talking about the politics of outsourcing uk jobs I am referring to the practical difficulties associated with a long distance telephone conversation over a poor quality connection with somebody who doesnt speak very good English. I believe I have referred to similar on CWDF previously but I guess you probably missed it.

Funnily enough I was looking at a job website today for an HGV1 job, and numerous adverts said something along the lines of "as this job is customer facing, the applicant must have fluent command of the English language" which is a coded way of saying "We've tried employing eastern Europeans and we're sick to death of the useless third-world cunts smashing up our trucks and sending our insurance premiums through the roof".
