My money's on the air conditioning in a server room packing in and everything overheating. And someone being too tight to have a back up elsewhere.

I listened to an American on Radio 4 telling us all about Delta Airlines (earlier) and BA's problems.
Interviewer: 'but surely they have back-up so they can retrieve the situation quickly?'
American expert: 'yeah but .... if the back-up is not universally available to all servers then it is very difficult to get the system back up. And the back-up needs to be compatible with all the different proprietary systems, for baggage, fuel loading, staff shifts, check-in, flight plans, and so on to enable all the systems to get back up. So if the back-up is not configured for all these linked systems and one system cannot be got back up then the back-up is of no use.' ............... and so on.
Luvvit when nerds don't have a proper vocabulary to explain a simple logistical issue.

I listened to an American ... I have a bit of experience on this matter but 'Yep we fucked up' never made it into the reports. I wonder why?

In praise of Finnair, their pilots are usually out of Finland's air force and seem very competent; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Finnair. "Good evening folks, this is your captain speaking. Regret to announce a slight delay to our arrival in London while I follow up a report Received of unidentified aircraft approaching Finnish airspace from the east. This aircraft is armed and consequently may be targeted, so please be prepared to assume the position in the event that have to make an emergency high-speed diving turn. It may also become necessary to jettison passengers' baggage, but don't be alarmed - families travelling together will be spared whenever possible."

Readers' comments: "Brought in contacts where ground staff have to work 30 minutes after their shift finish time when required for NO pay... The worst ceo BA has ever had by far." "Turned a once fantastic airline into a very poor low cost carrier in record time... whilst telling his customers how he is doing it for them... Get him out." "It's a warning. He's feeling the pressure and he's telling everyone that he's looking for a scapegoat or ten. If he thinks that mass-dismissals of 'disloyal' staff will turn the board's anger away from him, he won't hesitate. So long as his bonus this quarter is unaffected, he has no problem effectively destroying the company!" "This man has the intellect of a donkey, he thinks it is somehow ok to convert BA into a no-frills low cost airline and this is the result. As for his PR skills, even Stalin could do better than him." "I often flew BA on long haul flights but not any more! The staff are arrogant, the service is bad even in business class and when I complained the reply was to write to the relevant office. Exactly the same attitude as Iberia! The journalists are right, there is nothing British about British Airways any longer!" "I know many people who work for BA who say the management team haven't a clue what they are doing and they have created a deeply unpleasant working environment. More and more staff are leaving." "Hello, how may I help you? No, Alex, there are no vacancies at our call centre. You were the weakest link. Goodbye!"

Its a bit insane how computer systems are taking over everything so rapidly.
Apparently London City airport are shortly going to have they air traffic control situated elsewhere rather than at the airport itself, using remote controlled cameras. I don't really know why - an on-site tower seems much more sensible. I know most of the co-ordination is done by electronics anyway but surely the Mk1 human eyeball is a basically useful thing to have in the right location ?

No, I'm sure Alex Cruz can do it from his iPad when he's in bed. Why pay more?

"Hello, how may I help you? No, Alex, there are no vacancies at our call centre. You were the weakest link. Goodbye!" The bit your missing out that came first is that BA had effectively gone down the pan by steadfastly trying to be the quality airline no longer wanted by anywhere near enough trade to be remotely viable. What has happened is the shareholders would rather try this than throwing in the towel and most certainly loosing everything.

What would Francis Drake have thought of it, to know that 'British' Airways is now run by a slimy Spanish git?
