Well on and off over the last few weeks I have been stripping out all of the internals of the bathtub, it now floats 6 inchs higher in the water and is one big open space with a BMC stuck up near the stern! Today I have been repairing the roof the strengthening chipboard which is laminated into the roof and sides had taken in water and was a right mess, I have had to cut it out strip it back to fibreglass ready to glass some marine ply in to replace it. It is literally one third of the roof that needs this doing so its hard work and very messy! I had turned on the aux power for the radio and was happily chipping away at the damp board when I could smell burning, I turned around and the fuel feed to the engine was literally on fire [plastic surrounding steel braided hose] well I had to decide fast was it better to run and claim on the insurance or stay and stop it going up? I decided to stay and disconnected the engine battery and the aux batteries which stopped it but I have no idea what has happened and no intention of connecting batteries to find out!! I knew the previous owner was a bodger but the wiring on the boat is a right mess so it will be rip it out and start again I think

Remember any GRP strengthening ribs in the hull may well be formed over paper rope - just to cheer you up! However I don't think the paper ever had and structural strength, it is just a way of forming a GRP rib. It is worth remembering and investigating if you ever want to put a fixing in the rib and are expecting wood.

Sounds like the engine was earthing through something it shouldn't. Check the earth strap/connection?

Yes, paper and cardboard can all be found in "Tubs" Our previous boat was a 40x12 Tub and the roof was a double skin of GRP with a inner honeycomb of cardboard rather like a sapele door Phil

I was so tempted to walk away however discovered by accident what caused the short circuit itwas a copper pipe that went to the webasto heater it touched a live connection and earthed back to the engine cooling the pipe on the way!! The roof was deffo chipboard laminated into the roof the other side is very strong but the side I have cleaned out was floppy and now is even floppier! I have cleaned up and turned the dehumidifier on to dry it all down. The issue is the windows leak as well and its throwing it down here, still tomorrow is another day and the bins I have filled will be emptied tomorrow for me to fill again!!

I used to race somebody with one, the bastard, I was the better sailor, he won nearly every time. One race we swapped boats and I almost lapped him!
