Off to town now, to try and sell some Lucky Heather to gypsies. Go on give it away, you know you want to.

I was given a Fiat 500 at Aberdeen airport four years ago - it got me to Worcester and back. My friend in Cheshire described it as a glorified shopping trolley. First car I ever rented was a Mini Metro (Austin?) -I liked that. Where did they all go? I know they had problems with plastic clutch bearings. Off to town now, to try and sell some Lucky Heather to gypsies. Ah,the Mini Metro, there is a car I'd happily kill with fire. I hated both the mini and the later metro. I have a vivid memory as a 10 year old of holding the traffic up on the A6003 Corby to Kettering with my Aunt Beryl traveling at a sedate and safe 35 MPH in her beige metro with a queue bigger than a caravaner behind her. Scared by this experience I then became old enough to both drive and repair one myself - a pastime that didn't take long to get tired of. To think the Metro was to be the savour of Austin Rover, while at a similar time also struggling Peugeot came up with the wonderful 205 a few years after the Metro. The rest, as they say is history, thankfully, along with the Metro and most of the bloody minis that preceded it. Gaz, not a Metro fan.

We had a Metro for about three years, cos it was cheap. I'd love to tell you what a great little car it was, and how cheap to run. I'd love to, but I'd be lieing. We bought a Renault Five. That was a car Rog

The only car of that ilk that was any damn good was the Maxi ......I used to call mine the "fairly"car fairly comfortable, fairly quick, fairly good handling, fairly reliable, fairly economical.

The trouble is, that virtually every boat I see with a "Welcome to moor alongside" sticker in the window, also has a "Boaters Christian Fellowship" sticker in another window, leading me to believe that my peaceful evening moored up will be ruined by constant God-bothery.

There were some gems hidden away in the BMC closets. The Maxi with the 1750 motor was actually better than the 1600 'Tina. The Rover P6 (and before it the P5) was brilliant as was the Triumph PI and Dolly Sprint. The sad thing was the rest of its offerings for the mass market was utterly cack!

When I was looking for a replacement for my 1750 Maxi, I had a test drive in a 1600 'tina ....... took it along a route I used regularly ...... and nearly put it in a ditch !!! the handling was totally crap compared to the Maxi ......... Hung on to the Maxi for another couple of years instead.

I have quite a fondness for the Metro. We had em as Panda's in Woolwich, and they didnt half get a beating and abuse, vehicle sympathy didnt enter into it but they stood up well and kept coming back from workshops for more of the same.

Metro was the first car dad provided as wheels for the pair of us to supposedly share...translated that meant little sis had wheels I didn't. ...I grew to hate that car......
I passed my test in it.

Awful as they were, They're becoming a classic now with values rising so if you've got one lurking somewhere... I'd keep it safe - the security was none existent.
btw incidentally, DON'T you all just love the way this place resembles an old folks home - here we all are, sitting around in the same room having umpteen conversations that have bugger all to do with the one that started it lol
I love it!
