A mobile signal booster would be handy in my boat but one of the first links that came up when I googled was an offcom page that informed me they are illegal and using one could land me with a fine up to £5,000 and up to a year in prison. Seems a bit draconian! www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-telecoms-and-internet/coverage/mobile-repeatersThey don't have much range and inside the boat even less for sure so I don't see how anyone, let alone offcom, would know. Any views?

They are very unlikely to cause issues and easy to check whether it does if you get on with the neighbours. Proviso to this that you don't buy one suitable for a large coverage area.
Very unlikely to get taken to court provided that at first indication of any problems with officialdom you stop using the repeater.

Thanks for the loan of that Andy, FYI it's set to an extremely narrow frequency that is as far away from any mobile frequency as humanly possible. What it's intended for I have no idea. I've now dug out my old 3 mifi, it's a 3G one but gets a good signal. I'll get some credit on and see how if it works ok. It'll be more farting about changing phone deals and whatnot but probably the best way forward.

Given your post in the other thread can you clarify what you are trying to improve, voice or internet? Internet. Have a mooch about on here - much of what will work in a caravan/motorhome will work on a boat. www.solwise.co.uk/solution-mobile-data.htmI've got their older version of this fairly basic router. www.solwise.co.uk/4g-routers-54rv.html. I use it for bringing in camp site wi-fi and then broadcasting it inside the 'van when I can't get a phone signal to tether to, but it will also work with 3g/4g. It was a bit of a faff to set up using an Ipad but I got thrre in the end.

Maybe I'm wrong but is this not a 3g signal booster. www.vodafone.co.uk/shop/accessories/sure-signal/

That is not a 3g booster. It creates a 3g signal that only your phone can connect to and routes everything through an internet connection. It is designed for people that live in an area without signal, so there is nothing to boost. Phone signal boosters are illegal because they can be used to intercept the calls, messages and data of any phone that connects to them. It is easy to take a booster to a busy area like a city center and then steal everyone's bank details etc.. The police use a device called a stingray to intercept calls etc... it is basically just a phone signal booster. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray_phone_tracker
