It closes, it opens, leaving a 2" overlap that I can't get at to clean up and paint under the brass strips it slides on. Rust had swelled up under the brass slides between the fixing screws turning them into a big dipper.
It appears that the only way to get it right off would be chopping something with an angle grinder. Is this common? It seems daft, it doesn't help security other than stopping anyone breaking in from chucking the hatch overboard.

Ours had bolts that acted as stoppers, if you slackened them you could slide the hatches all the way off on the back side, slide back on to replace and re tighten just enough to allow for smooth movement. Have a look underneath the hatch. (Hard to explain with out a picture.) Similar to these. www.midlandchandlers.co.uk/store/category/1413/product/ab-103.aspx

Cheers, I looked under and removed a runner for a look yesterday which on mine are hardwood.
On the roof at the front of the hole there's a welded on upstand/stop. The cover can't be lifted enough for either end to clear it due to the sides wrapping under the runner support steel. There's nothing to remove to let it rise higher. I can only think that at least one end of the cover was welded on in situ.
