How the hell do you get such a generous holiday entitlement that enables you to cruise the canals here for weeks on end?

Schools on holiday 4 June - 13 Aug. 10 weeks. My contract is "Kannus/Kokkola school days only". A week in October, 2 weeks at Christmas, a week in March. Holiday pay and paid extra days for working an 8-hour day instead of the normal 7:36h/day. Not so easy driving in Winter, 13 tonnes of bus sliding on black ice. Welcome to join us for a day if u like - going via Leeds-Castleford-Wakefield-Brighouse (in August).

Thanks for the offer btw which I (genuinely ) would have taken up but we will be in Provence in the 'van for the whole of august.

We're here on the L&L in July By the way, the L&L is an open sewer between Riley Green through Blackburn to Brierfield. Astounding amount of rubbish floating & a-festering.

According to local liveaboards when I was there, it's a bit of a vicious circle. CRT won't devote resources to the L&L because too few boaters use it, and boaters don't use it because it is too poorly maintained. The Rochdale canal is the same. When I was there, it was quite common to go a whole day without seeing another moving boat.

Also there are no 72-foot £150,000 boats cruising on these canals. 62' lock length limit I believe. Another 18 hours gone by and not passed by any boat. Very unlike the mad rush in Banbury!

To be honest, I found the Rochdale and the L&L too quiet for my liking. I like to see other boats moving, I like chatting to other boaters briefly at locks, I think it's a shame that these canals are so underused after so much effort went in to their restoration.

I noticed Mrs Tabby did a U-turn at Skipton. You have to be tough to brave Burnley, Blackburn and Wigan Funny last night as we couldn't get right up to the bank, had to use a gangplank. When we 'lifted the drawbridge' it was like we had our own moat.

I noticed Mrs Tabby did a U-turn at Skipton. You have to be tough to brave Burnley, Blackburn and Wigan Or you have to have a narrowboat that can become airborne and fly over the Bridgewater Canal stoppage, and unfortunately mine is a fairly basic model.

Did you spot the heiroglyphs on the entrance to Foulridge Tunnel?

One of the delights of the system, in my view, are the peculiarities it throws up.
The weird lock mechanisms and 'cloughs' is it, on the L&L, coupled with the lack of boat traffic, and excellent shower blocks.
The manic hire boat traffic on the Llangollen, lift bridges and fierce by washes.
The grass locks, lack of regular moorings, and river sections on the K&A.
Don't you think this is what makes boating on the inland waterways so great?
If it was all the same it may be quite dull.
