So, we have Blissworth tunnel to do today.
Packed up and ready to move off, when Jane shouts "Just pop the headlight on".
We rarely check it before tunnels, so it was a great idea....but of course it didn't work!
Lots of cursing (which didn't really help but just upset the locals) and lots of jiggling and remaking connections (which did help) and voila...we have light.
Electrickery drives me bonkers. Why does it work fine, and then suddenly, and just when you need it.......nothing.
Anyway, now I'm moored, I 've cleaned all the connections, and replaced a navi light bulb as well, so we should be good for the next tunnel.

Yeah, and put another 50p in the fucking swear jar. Change the headlight bulb say every 2 years, and always have a new spare. But LED torches are just as bright these days, so just have a couple of those available for emergencies. We had 4 LED torches in addition to the headlamp today in the 20-minute tunnel, worked great.

Clearly the problem was that you ate the electricity that should have gone to the light. Greedy pig!

I'm BEGINNING to hate the stuff too Rog, so you're not alone. Take last night - despite having a strapped up hand, I took the boat to finish filling up with water and whilst doing so, put the washer on (with engine running) for a 30 minnute, 30degree wash ... once that was done and the tank was full, I chugged over the aqueduct, turning round and headed home - on arrival (bit of a neighbourly panic trying to "help" me moor up (which I didn't need as no wind was blowing and I was quite able to manage a rope one handed) the batterries according to smartgauge were at 94%... This morning, after only a couple of hours telly watching and laptop charging it says 61% ffs. Moral here however is even WITH a 12v fridge-freezer is DONT let anything (especially cans) touch the back of it as a) they freeze solid overnight and b) they use up precious amps... WAY too many... TODAY however, I pick up the www.screwfix.com/p/impax-imdy2500lbi-2200w-inverter-generator-230v/16100#product_additional_details_containerso might set the combi inverter charger thingy in the cupboard, to do an equalisation charge off it and take it from there. My next topic will be "where to buy 4 new 135a batteries for buttons!

My tunnel light uses a car headlamp which, of course, has two filaments. There is a handy change-over switch so, that, if one filament fails, I can switch to the other quickly. Not sure if this is common or not?

Talking about electricity. I've always been a bit surprised about the capacity of our batteries. So I fitted a voltmeter to gauge consumption over the last year.
Recently I noticed that the voltage would drop randomly to 11.8 to 11.9 volts from say 12.2v. So whilst the voltage was reading 11.9v I switched off each MCB in turn to see which circuit was causing the problem.
The suspect circuit was the one which had the label 'bath, rad pumps'. When this switch was off the voltage returned to 12.3v. On inspection I found that not only the pumps were on this circuit but also the 3 way fridge (which is only connected to gas) and the HiFi system (despite there being another MCB labelled 'Radio TV'.
In the end I disconnected the supply to all of the HiFi equipment (an old car stereo, amplifier and 6 CD changer). This cured the spurious voltage drop. Not only that, the general power consumption on the boat has been dramatically improved. I'm now wondering how much fuel I've wasted over the years due to this problem!
So I'm going to treat myself to a modern car stereo with Bluetooth and DAB and leave the CD changer and amplifier unplugged.

There was to be no tea and cake at the Cargo Café for the canoeists who entered the northern portal. The walls are now red with blood and those are not stalactites that hang from the roof but intestines.
