Here's a video walkaround of a Springer narrowboat from the ever-loved and trustworthy Whilton Marina.
At 4:46 the salesman states that the skin fittings need to be a minimum of 10" above the waterline, otherwise the boat will not be insurable, and the surveyor will "fail" it. This is news to me, as my skin fittings are around 2" at most above the waterline and have been since it was built 31 years ago, the surveyor didn't mention it at all, and my insurer, who wanted a copy of the survey due to Desiree's age didn't raise any queries about her insurability.
I thought the 10" thing applied solely to hire boats. Any comments or suggestions welcome.

I've heard of the 10 inch thing but its not very practical. Maybe it applies to hull penetrations which are capable of sinking the boat, like air cooling holes for old Lister engines for example. My first narrow boat had a Lister SR2 and a surveyor did suggest that the rectangular holes cut in the side of the boat were moved up, which I think was a good move.
I suppose a skin fitting could get wiped off by rubbing a lock wall but unless someone was completely clueless I can't really see it being a big risk.
If that was a requirement then on a lot of boats you'd have to use a sump and a pump for sinks rather than gravity overboard discharge.

Whilton Marina's sister marina is Venetian Marina, and I did once read that the reason it is called "Venetian" is that you would have to be blind to buy a boat from them. |

I have skin fittings in this boat which are about 6 inches above the waterline and as we all know the bathtub had them below the waterline!!! These will be sorted shortly

I saw that bloke on several Whilton Marina Youtube videos and thought he was a bit 'iffy'.
Venetian Marina - we called in for Calor gas 3 weeks ago and were surprised at how friendly and helpful they were.
Where's Thunderboat's very own BSS bloke Nigel Carton? Someone pull him out of the pub!

The 10" thing is in the BSS for the hire boat category. Its advised as best practice for private craft.
The BSS and best practice then goes on to explain that if a skin fitting is too low as long as what it is fitted to it runs upwards for 10" above the water line its acceptable. Further best practice suggests metal pipes or at least double clipped "rubber" ones plus a cock on the skin fitting itself.

Our exhaust exits underwater too 👍
I know of several narrow boats identically equiped as our boat.
Ignore it, load of bollocks.

Ignore it, load of bollocks. few narrowboats have those arrangements. do you know of any narrowboats on the canal system that discharge the heads into the cut? .................... if so, please name and shame. |
