Both the wife and I have been busy this weekend working on the boat as last weekend was family & fishing. Debbie finally got the rear deck top coated, having rust killed, primed and anti-slipped it during the week. I must say, it looks bloody good, and it's a relief to finally have all the superstructure painted, just the coach line to be done on one side then all the painting is finished!!! I spent the weekend re-furbing, cleaning and lacquering the brass fender eyes before re-fitting them with new sealer and brass screws. Some of the old screws had sheared off and had to be re-drilled and tapped. For the silicone sealer application I made up circular masks from the low tack plastic tape we use at work to protect finished stainless, ally or brass. These masks worked a treat and allowed me to apply a really neat bead of sealer, something I normally struggle withππ Fitted the new rope fenders today and it's a job well done methinks. Next weekend it's finally on to the hospital silencer....no excuses as the wife is going out to avoid any cursing that might arise if I hit any problems.π

Did a bit yesterday morning and a further bit yesterday evening, evening work was rapidly stopped due to hitting a bees nest (no stings but having 50 or so bees being pissed off was enough to make me rapidly retreat). Today done nothing, partly because I was kept awake by a bit of a rave until 4am - we have had quiet words and there will be no repeat tonight, at least the generator has run out of fuel!

Having used anti-rust chemical 'Fertan' two years ago, let me tell you what a fake snake-oil that is! Areas liberally treated with Fertan continue to rust! Re-scraping and painting with red oxide soon. Don't buy Fertan! F for Fake!!

I'm footloose and fancy free this week, Mrs Gazza and the Dwarf are away on holiday with her mother and her brother and family, I heroically offered to stay behind and look after the dogs leaving them to have a relaxing fun filled holiday without the added complication of dogs.... Plan was to get a few more jobs done while I have a clear run at it without interruption. So far I've fitted this lovely blingy HansGrohe mixer tap, I was given a pair by a friend, googling reveals I wouldn't have wanted to buy a pair with my own hard earned! To be fair it's a quality thing, it replaced a screwfix cheapo mixer, the difference in feel is night and day. Lockers are stating to be filled with booze, water and soft drinks for our annual pilgrimage onto the Great Ouse The only other job completed over the weekend was fitting a new starter solenoid to my mates Yamaha 28, I've gone for a Lucas unit with the manual push button on the contacts so it can be started should the coil fail, my mates a badminton player who's shoulder and back give him trouble from time to time, pull stating the yam was getting to be a chore, sods law said the solenoid packed in when he was suffering with a duff shoulder! Hopefully the mercury will drop a bit during the week so I can get on with a couple more jobs after work.

Having used anti-rust chemical 'Fertan' two years ago, let me tell you what a fake snake-oil that is! Areas liberally treated with Fertan continue to rust! Re-scraping and painting with red oxide soon. Don't buy Fertan! F for Fake!! Fertan is not an anti rust treatment. It is a rust converter. That means that it converts rust that exists at that time to a more inert oxide. That is all it does. Any bare steel will still rust if left unpainted as Fertan does not provide a barrier between the steelwork and the atmosphere. Vactan is often better on surface rust as it leaves a polymer coating over the treated area which protects it from the atmosphere for days or even a week or so. Fertan has the advantage in deeper rust as the water spraying for a few hours you are supposed to do irrigates Fertan right into the rust, but you should have removed any loose rust anyway, it is, for a rust converter, cheap if you have large areas to cover but quite messy. Immediate painting is required. Vactan is less good for deep rust as once it dries the polymer skin is in place and any further work on the area is more difficult as you don't know if the converter has reached the lowest depths of the rust. It's excellent for light rust that you cannot immediately paint. Just don't wait too long. You can paint directly over the polymer. Anti rust treatments they are not. Mostly that is provided by paint on narrowboat externals. I have found both to be excellent rust converters.

I used to use a seriously good product on a then girlfriend's nb and because I knew where to go I managed to get some more in the 90's for Sabina H. I just did a bit of Googling but could only find 2 entries ..... one from Popular Science in 1976 and the other from the place I do not visit ..... however as three of the main reply (ers) at the start of the thread are now on this site ....... canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/66125-rust-bullet/

Nice tap mate, been thinking about replacing ours as everything's 12 years old now and we have very hard water, but I think the central heating rads will have to take precedents as one has sprung a tiny leak, and they are looking a bit tired. I'm sure I could have a full time job fettling the boat, it just doesn't pay very well!!

I read the Fertan instructions and believe my work with it to be 100% properly done. Painted over when dry, a day later. Seeing is believing and I now see and believe Fertan to be rubbish. I won't be buying it again. Money better invested in red oxide paint.

I don't think its even worth painting it. rust ensure all loose rust is removed. Painting just introduces little pockets where moisture can remain and the tin worm can have a field day !

If it's pitted and you washed it, let it dry, applied your converter, painted only for it to bubble up later, you left unseen moisture in the pits, then sealed in with layers of converted rust and paint.

As soon as we get 240volts to use the vacuum cleaner I will scrape these sides above our v-drains again and slap red oxide paint on. And then Rylard's boat paint.

It was a bit cooler today, I've a Yamaha 8a outboard waiting for some love, instead I decided to knock this up as a surprise for when the dwarf returns home. I'm short of a few coach bolts and screws along with some decking planks to make the slide platform, the OSB is just to hold it together so I could build the frame work. I hate working with wood, but sense prevailed and seeing as we don't live at wicksteed park I decided against a swing made out of 1 1/4" NB tube. The shed will get a lick of timber treatment when I do the swing/slide set.
