I'm surprised that a gay man is insensitive to the hurt caused by the use of the N word. In polite society, no one uses this word anymore. The word carries too much baggage. I'm sorry that we can't use niggardly any more as it has a different etymology but I suspect people use the word carelessly not knowing where it comes from. It just sounds too similar and I wouldn't ordinarily use it.

Please, start calling your chimney covers 'chimney hats' rather than the more common 'coolie hat'. Coolie was a derogatory term used in colonial South Africa to describe people of south east Asian origin. Imagine a peasant farmer in Vietnam with their hat to keep the sun off it's the same as our chimney hats eh?
And while we're at it: why is it still acceptable to use the terms 'blackmail' and 'blacklist' in modern day politically correct Britain?

As I explained earlier, there is a big difference between using "nigger" as a derogatory term towards individuals or racial groups, and using the word as part of a turn of phrase. Declining to use the turn of phrase is an attempt to rewrite history, in the same way that modern intolerant-liberal students want vestiges of their universities past and origins to be deleted by knocking down statues and plaques, because they are associated with slavery. IMO it is far better to keep reminders of these times visible, for those occasions when we get all self-righteous about how wonderful we are compared to those damned foreigners. And let us remember, black yoof in America often refer to each other as nigger (or niggah) which just goes to prove that it is not the word itself that is offensive or racist, only the way it is used and the underlying sentiment.

In the same way that homosexuals took ownership of the word 'queer' and took the sting out of it. If you stand in Harlem and use the N word you won't get a friendly reception.

Is it some special club with rules to keep black people out? I should be happy to see more 'ethnics' on the waterways - seems mostly to be elderly wrinklies.

You would if you were black yoof! but yes the sting has been taken out of "queer" and that is a good thing. The word is disempowered as an insult. Surely that is a better way to deal with it than trying to get the word banned? Prohibition never works. as I keep saying, it is not the word, it is the sentiment behind the word that is relevant.

Is it out of order to find the term "the nigger in the woodpile" amusing? Its so archaic I can't see how it could be seen as offensive except by someone wanting offending !

as I keep saying, it is not the word, it is the sentiment behind the word that is relevant. No, actually, what matters is the perception of the person who feels insulted. I'm not on about third parties. If you use the N word at work and a coloured person complains, you would lose at an industrial tribunal. I know this from my company's policies.
