I have no animosity.
I have no problem with C&RT other than being a large organisation, and under funded, they're a bit poor, plus the management can be more than a bit rubbish.
I will say this one final time.
I see their faults.
You see their faults and perceive an ulterior motive.
That's the only difference we have.
I have said this several times now, and don't want to continue antagonising you, Jenlyn, or anyone else, so I'll back off.

I thought even you felt there were some areas where you were uncomfortable about CRT's actions. You've also mentioned the changing requirements of the waterways. The liveaboards I think you are referring to have one of the biggest voices at the moment. Who knows, they could change the law. If you want to protect your freedom to explore the system, then like the rest of us, wouldn't it be better to divert your effort into stopping CRT from wasting funds on pointless activities and empire building. Once parts of the system get closed down due to poor maintenance, it will affect all of us. Yes, I am uncomfortable about some of CRT's more heavy handed actions. But the fact remains that leisure boaters and CCing liveaboards who actually CC, never seem to have a problem other than the occasional logging error that is quickly resolved. In the cases of the Trent court cases, whilst my personal view is that morally, folk who have a boat on the Trent should have a licence (yes I know, it's really a PBC) nevertheless I agree that the law doesn't require it outside of the MNC and CRT are thus out of order. i am certainly all in favour of holding CRT to account regarding maintenance, but equally I have seen that maintenance these days is far better than it was say 30 years ago, despite a massive increase in usage. the biggest threat is lack of government funding, and to avoid that CRT have to show that the canals are usable by everyone, including cyclists, rowers, fishermen etc. So boaters' antipathy towards these other users is not helpful! It would help if CRT didn't waste the existing funds on pointless activities and empire building. It's way bigger than needed. Top heavy and not enough funds being put into the front line where it could be put to more use.

Rog Your not antagonising me at all rog , Im glad to hear your views on the issue, please don't stop posting them. This idea that crt is a poor organisation is wrong they have a property portfolio of £660 million and a yearly budget of around 180-190 million that isn't a poor organisation.

We are at the halfway point of our two week holiday, we have met plenty of CCrs and only one CMr . We have met plenty of CRT lockies and staff who are all complaining about management, and not met one manager which tells a story. Maintenance on this stretch is appalling paddles not working [one paddle out of four not good for that lock if it breaks]! the crt staff know about it but haven't been instructed to repair, its crap and in another week the main season will start, how long before something gives and holidays are ruined because of this? However what we have noticed is the grass is cut and the towpaths are mostly clear so all is good for walkers and cyclists! Its all just an illusion they dont really care about boaters just that on the surface it looks pretty It's the same on the Calder and Hebble, the majority of locks had some problem or other. I suppose we should make a note and complain. A better idea would be for the data loggers to have each lock and paddle on their device and log obviously broken paddles and lock gear, better still carry a windlass and check them all. I did a bit of volunteer lock painting recently, the Volly coordinator couldn't wind up a paddle, she hadn't been trained. A separate man and pick up truck had to come out to wind up a paddle. FFS! We are at Mirfield we were going to go to either Brighouse or Huddersfield but it wasnt worth the effort, the run to Brighouse had no water in it and as we were told by a boater coming from Huddersfield the basin was full. Did you come across the boat on the lock mooring with all the dogs? he is wanted by the police in Castleford for theft of red paint, just shows you all you have to do is steal paint, paint boat from blue to red and CRT and police dont know who you are

I'm with you all the way about culling the C&RT management, . . . 95% of it would be about the right figure to get rid of, but I don't see how having a bunch of office chair polishers walking the towpaths once a week would help at all, . . . . they wouldn't know what to look for, and they wouldn't know what to do about whatever they did see. Sack the useless, overpaid sods, spend some of the savings in salaries and wages on lock keepers and lengthsmen, and the rest on repairs and maintenance.

I don't think folk would appreciate the smell . . . they wouldn't necessarily have to stink, they could be kept alive, fed, and hosed down every few days by the lengthsmen who had replaced them, . . . it would provide a strong incentive for their successors to do a rather better job !
