Is it my imagination, or has there been a significant rise in the number of roving traders in recent years? (I don't mean coal/diesel boats).
Arrived in Braunston today to find (apart from the permanent Gongoozlers Rest Cafe boat which has been there since 2000) another cafe boat, a jewellery boat, a herb boat and a boat selling all manor of stuff from fire lighters to solar lights.
That's four roving trade boats just moored within Braunston. We have past others in recent days too.
Roving trade boats seemed a novelty a few years ago, or is it just that I'm noticing more?

I know a couple that have started trading recently, I agree that the numbers seem to be rising. I think the majority just about scratch out a living, but I guess that's to be expected.

We've a few here too... a "boat genie" (bloke who does boat repairs) a "canal experience" (he does one and half hour trips) an "artist" and a couple who do "wood burning"...

Did he mean someone selling and fitting woodburning stoves based on a boat? Seems an interesting idea to me.

Is it my imagination, or has there been a significant rise in the number of roving traders in recent years? I've noticed more too. I was talking to a new one at Stoke Bruerne the other day who seemed very keen to find out when we were going so they could grab our space (one place closer to the lock!). I don't know if it's my imagination but it also seems I'm having to plan around an increasing number of 'festivals' and canalside 'fetes'. They do say if you can't beat them, join them. Do you get any other special concessions with a trade licence? I thought about doing guitar lessons from the boat a while back. The problem is that we don't stay in one place, so I could only see it working by doing one off beginners introductory lessons. An hour to learn a few chords and some basics for example.

I get the impression some of them think they have special rights to hog prime moorings too. No, must resist, we are all boaters...

I had one tell me that "Mr parry had told her they were the life and breath of the canal". (Another sucker). I know several traders, and they are great, but as in all walks of life, you get a few idiots.

Hotel boats used to be a bit like that when I was travelling on the narrow canals in the late 90s. Some sort of sense of priority.

Not seen a guitar lesson boat yet though!
