CRT will never catch up with the backlog of maintenance. Its never going to keep up with the amount of work that needs doing, especially as they now use contractors. When they took over from BW, they lost the opportunity to close up on the backlog that had grown. Bad negotiating skills and foresight saw them clobbered by the government. CRT lost because a desperate bid to move away from government control saw them basically do and say anything just to get the deal done. Year on year I see the system crumbling. Doing the trip yearly from London to brum, I can see the deterioration, and it's substantial. I am not sure about the never catching up,but I think your totally right in all you say regarding CRT incompetence with contractors. negotiating skills and lack of foresight some of the people I have met are just bureaucratic idiots who can't think. and work for an organisation that doesn't foster individual thinking either. Failures in control of contractual obligations is very common in many big organisations such as Water companies etc. Lack of understanding of contracts because the management concerned is not versed in the legal side often means that jobs are not being done to the correct standard because it wasn't stipulated correctly. Huge sums get wasted this way. Often the contractors could do a much better job but are restricted by the contract. Some management seems to think that a contract is a battleground and they have to screw the other side whereas when done properly it is a system to protect both sides and ensure the job is done properly and at a sensible price.

I'm a member of nbta. I joined because I saw the wider issues of housing were being promoted by them. (It wasn't just about canals).
I don't support them on all the issues they raise, but I find the ability of being able to put your own issues to them, and getting support beneficial. There are many fronts to NBTA, and that quite simply helps them achieve one simple objective, unity. The other associations cannot get close, there is far too much infighting.
NBTA are far far from perfect, but they are genuine, and definitely committed to what they believe in.

if you feel our exchange of views is going nowhere then fine. I don't see where your attempt to denigrate me fits with that,I for my part have answered your points with the best of intention. Sorry, but CDS, you're the stand out the worst offender when it comes to denigrating or belittling people, and then you try and pass it off as 'humour' So far you've had extended run ins with Delta9, MJC, Naughtyfox, PaulG2, Kris, Jenlyn, Tadworth, the list goes on. It does far far more damage to the forum than the odd post claiming someone is a bell-end. If you want to get a rise out of people, don't be surprised when you get more than you bargained for. Sadly I feel the forum would be far better off without you, you've made a name for yourself now and most won't expect you to change.

Don't know thats the case chap with Delta9,MJC ,PaulG2 or Jenlyn, these people I hold in great esteem and respect and are well capable of besting me in any argument,I tell you what,if any of these four you mention are denigrated or belittled by my posts then let them PM me and I shall delete my account. After I of course apologise to them. The other three, who cares.

You simply don't know when to stop digging CDS. Let's start again eh ? You tone down your abusive posts, and we won't throw it back at you ?Something you obviously don't like. Having been in the army, my store of abuse will never run dry, so let's shake hands and move on ?

So just let me remind you again your a fuckwit.

Well, I won't take sides on the original point, but my own boat is 30 years old, the minimum thickness of the (originally 8mm) hull is 7.2mm and I can confidently predict that barring accidents it will still be afloat long after I have kicked the bucket.
