I can see some heath and green benefits depending on how that electricity is generated. When you think about it, it must be more practical and economical to have a few big generators than millions of small ones. Anyway, I only started this thread to wind Gazza up.

As you all know the bathtub is going to be electric, I had an electric car [now sold because of boat issues] and I really do believe that within 10 years that diesel cars will be gone and diesel powered boats will be in serious trouble! Petrol will be gone shortly after diesel I suspect

There is going to need to be serious investment in the network if there is the remotest possibility of this becoming reality.
The power grid we are repeatedly told often runs at or near to full capacity, to add on a nation's transport needs to a creaking network is a recipe for disaster. It will also signal a massive growth in nuclear to generate the electric needed, (but that will give the eco warriors something else to cry about), or how else will we generate it?

Maybe all the hot air generated on internet forums could be used to generate a bit of power?

Why do you think the 2 new nuclear power plants are needed and wind generators are appearing faster than poppy plants?. As an aside most of the EU will have got rid of petrol/diesel cars far quicker than us so where will we buy our outdated cars from?

Gone will be the days of taking a beautiful lady out for a drive in the country, and conveniently running out of petrol.

Gone will be the days of taking a beautiful lady out for a drive in the country, and conveniently running out of petrol. Trust me, you can run out of electricity too. I had to tow my mates Nissan Leaf to a charge point a few weeks ago. Apparently he tried 3 and for various reasons no joy. Then he ran out of juice. Nissan say you can't tow it but we did it anyway. I think you can charge it up that way.

Pah! Piffle! There's loads of oil left, in Romania's oil fields, Putin-Mafia-Land (the USSR - it never really dissolved, did it?), Alaska, etc.
If fuel was getting seriously low then driving cars all round the world would be supervised and trips on jets to get a tan in Teneriffe would be prohibited. 99% of car journeys in the UK are just for fun. People like driving and will make any excuse to get behind the wheel.
What a squabble there will be when natural oil does become scarce. Unlimited slaughtering around the globe.

Is this the same brilliant government advisers who promoted encouraging people to switch to diesel a few years ago?
Do you think it likely that we can work towards a single policy target for over 20 years?
I'd frankly be surprised, based on the brilliant Brexit policy amongst a host of other mismanaged and bungled issues.

Perhaps we could burn politicians and dishonest judges to keep the lights on? That would be an 'enlightened' use for 'em. Heh, geddit? 'Enlightened'.

To start with, I'd keep quiet about having a friend who's actually bought a Nissan Leaf My mate has got a Tesla S (0-60 in 2.5 seconds) Gone will be the days of walking a few miles to find a garage to buy a gallon. Instead we'll be walking to the nearest Wilco's to buy an extension lead.

Scaled up scalextric might work for large roads. Not rocket science really specially when the technology arrives to transfer electricity through an air gap.
The Tesla bloke Elon Musk has some very advanced ideas like multiple level subsurface tunnel roads with lifts so I could see some fairly impressive infrastructure alterations happening if and when electric cars do come into mass use.
