It's a bit chilly in the kitchen, and boats always look nice with smoke coming out the chimney on a Sunday morning.

what a load of cock!
Those guys are likely to be outside contractors, they have an HSE policy that requires them to wear full PPE. This includes yellow raingear which is what is issued as a matter of course. Has nobody noticed that it was a rainy day? However someone has forgotten to do an adequate risk assessment - they should be wearing lifejackets.
I agree that HSE has gone a bit mad, but the compulsory wearing of PPE has alerted workers to think about safety. To suggest that as a result we have dumbed it all down to the extent that workers no longer feel responsible for their own safety is, quite frankly, a load of bollox. During 50 years spent in the construction industry I have seen vast improvements in safety awareness, mainly because of the need to do on-site toolbox talks every day before going to work and the need to be fully prepared for possible eventualities.
As for the scrotes ............. I recall working for the government in Malta in 1975. There was huge unemployment. The labour department made up groups of 1,000 unemployed youths and created paramilitary regiments with full military regulations. The lads were assigned public works tasks. I worked with a specialist group who had been assigned to the Diving School operated by seconded Italian navy divers, and between us we constructed sewage marine outfall works. Brilliant - the lads earned their dole money, they learned to respect military discipline and huge improvements were made to the infrastructure of the island.

Ive just lit a fire cos coming back to Horror House felt cold and damp and as Foxy says its a lovely sight..in fact tempted to light the wood burner as well as the Rayburn.... Got back to the boat last night (had been back to Benfleet to collect car) and was lying in bed (in the early hours) wondering "what the hell is that noise" ........ it was the central heating coming on !!! ...... bloody hell it's still July !!! I mean I know I'm just a soft Southerner but even so ....... July !!! ..... I suppose I'd better turn the setting to a slightly lower temperature.

back on topic (partly) the latest craze around here seems to be petty arson, possibly by bored schoolkids during the holidays; in a very affluent area, a large conifer hedge has been torched, clearly with petro-chemical assistance and a swing gate leading into a Woodland Trust area has been similarly partially burned.
we used to live in fear of 'the birch', nowadays it is non PC for kids to be in fear of anything.
