Well if they had canals in North Korea or similar regimes I doubt it would happen, nor would similarly stupid acts. With freedom comes responsibility but unfortunately some of the cretins that walk in our society (using their knuckles) don't grasp this.

I'm just glad all of the CRT contractors are wearing not just full length hi-viz jackets but also bright orange and yellow plastic trousers. After all, if they weren't, how would they be able to see each other?
I saw some volunteers clearing litter from the towpath yesterday and was pleased to see they were all wearing full PPE and steel-toecapped boots, I mean the thought of a narrowboat jumping out of the canal and mowing them down because it hadn't seen them or an empty crisp packet falling on one of their feet is just too awful to contemplate.

That hard hat would have saved the bloke stood under the block and tackle should it have failed mind.

They should all be wearing three-point safety harnesses, what if one of them fell into that lock?

They should all be wearing three-point safety harnesses, what if one of them fell into that lock? Parachutes would be better! yes I agree with your general sentiment. Unfortunately we live in a society where it is no longer reasonable to expect people to have regard for their own safety. They must be saved from themselves by wearing lots of PPE. Which of course has the effect of making them casual about their own safety. Vicious circle! What REALLY annoys me is when I see the tiny tots from the nursery school a few doors down from our house going for a walk along our very quiet street with virtually no traffic, and on a wide pavement, all wearing Hi Viz jackets. Including their carers. Madness! Next they will each require a council employee to walk in front carrying a red flag, and each have a flashing orange beacon in their heads, and a device that detects if they are walking backwards which then emits a loud beeping noise.

I fully agree and would support any move to arm volunteers with any semi-automatic weapons appropriate to their role.

Well I think that would be a tad extreme, I would however support people just taking some personal responsibility and not behaving like knuckle dragging cretins and wrecking stuf.

Find those responsible make them walk the towpath in high viz Jackets with their crime advertised on boards around their neck..then make them clear all the rubbish from the canals to atone....we r too soft on vandals..they should be made to right their wrongs.

I thought I used to see them wearing lifejackets, has something changed since we stopped boating? well spotted Martin, they should all be wearing life jackets. When I saw a Crt volunteer coordinator in leeds recently encouraging volunteers to work lock side with out life jackets and dip their hands in the water before eating food. I discreetly pointed out that I didn't think it was good they where putting their hands in the water because of the risk of veils. I was told to piss off and she made a complaint to the local waterways manager, mistakenly Thinking I still worked for them.

Whilst I don't condone the mindless act in anyway. I do find the fact that the navigation authority finds it difficult to lift two balence beams out of the cut very worrying. "We’ve also been left with the task of recovering the beams from the water which is no small feat." What the fuck are they going to do when the enevitable major breach happens, because of the lack of maintenance?

Unclear from the photo what the damage is. I first thought cut off by chain saw? Firms making Hi-Viz gear are laughing all the way to the bank. This is what happens when there are no lengthsmen/lock keepers looking after their patch any more. I'm sure the Police have caught the culprits already and have clamped their noses tight with mole grips and stuck fireworks jumping jacks in their underpants.
