Couple of pubs to recommend down in Brizol:
Smoke & Mirrors (Denmark Street {to the left of The Hippodrome}) The Bank Tavern: John Street (Excellent real ale pub) The Crown: All Saints Lane (St Nicholas Market)

We're 2 hours ahead of Britain which is why my drivel is often the first in the mornings. And when bedtime is 9pm that's just 7pm in Chipping Norton.

Next time you go past all the scrap do so at speed and explain it's for the environment and diesel engines need to be run under load or they are horribly polluting.
If someone counters your argument by saying moored boats are even better for the environment then ask if they support permanent closure of the locks and withdrawal of maintenance .
I'm a terrible eco worrier but I can't stand hypocrisy.

By the way, Maggers, the Crouch village looks OK. There's the railway, and if you don't hate cycling, the lanes of Essex can make for nice rides. You'll have the whole coast to explore. I went to Southminster by train once and cycled back to Chelmsford. Saltmarshes and curlews.

Really enjoyed our day in Bristol today - great weather helps! Firstly a walk up to Clifton to a hardware shop (still looking for Tilley lamp bits). Blimey, hills in Bristol are STEEP! Seems very gentrified compared to when I was in Clifton Hill House in 1975! Then back down to the other side of the harbour to the underfall yard - but it was just closing, which was a pity because it looked quite interesting. Then went to Force 4 Chandlers. What a shower of shite, crap service and borderline rude. We wanted some 16mm hemp or polyhemp rope as the centreline is knackered. So a long but interesting walk to Bristol rope and twine co. on Feeder rd. - we probably should have just stopped off there tomorrow but we were on a mission! Anyway 15 metres of what I think was actually 18mm polyhemp for £30 later, we got an Uber back to the boat. Having Travelpower probs but I think I have identified the problem (see CWDF thread, for which I have received zilch assistance) so a few hours spent fettling the TP alternator, But did washing and tumble drying, you seem to get a lot of electricity for a £1 card. This afternoon a general walk around, some nice areas like Queen Square, Welsh Back, market area etc then the inevitable beer by the water watching the boaty action. And another one!
The whole atmosphere is great, everybody having fun, no bad behaviour, it's like a sunny bank holiday. Except that it's a Tuesday! Is Bristol always this good?

If you're still there tomorrow Nick, then head upto St Nicholas market. Well worth a visit. There's a chap selling some delicious pie's as you head up past the market towards The Galleries shopping centre. Try a couple of his homity pie's.

I lived in Bristol 30 years ago and it had it's own thing going on, big but relaxed.

You idiot - it's not pies you were supposed to purchase, but pie's ! "There's a chap selling some delicious pie's as you head up past the market towards The Galleries shopping centre. I think the stray apostrophe in pies had escaped from St. Nick's (assuming he owns the market). I've put it back again.
