I guess you are thinking about the van den plas version. All fur coat and no..... We had the mark 1 metro in the forces both saloon and van and they really were a great machine we had very little problems with them. I later had a 1500 diesel mark 2 it was a good vehicle as well, until it was written off by would you believe a motorbike That was the 115 with the French PSA 1.5 Diesel engine, they were much better than the 114 with the 1.4 Diesel that often had headgasket problems. Peter.

If I recall correctly the engine in a Metro was very similar to the A series that was fitted into the Classic Mini, so I would say it would have been doable yes. If you are both terminally bored :- www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.phpJust had a look at that site, it's great to see the work that very enthousiastic people are doing to their Mini's. Peter.

Great car Metro cant see what you are all complaining about!! I guess you are thinking about the van den plas version. All fur coat and no..... We had the montego in that model. I also had a metro and loved it. 4th gear was called E for economy or summit. What I loved about it was the wheel on each corner. Rip the handbrake up and it down on it's axis. I could almost hand brake park it doing a 180 into a parking space with cars on each side. It had a terminal death when I crashed it into someone's front garden. It went quite well only paid 50 quid for it.

Do you remember the jammed steering under braking debacle? Stepping hard on the brake would trap a gaiter at the bottom of the steering column rendering the steering locked and useless. The cure was iirc to 'scrunch' the gaiter up using a cable tie so that it didn't get trapped.......gawd bless BL They were well into shed territory when I was being put upon to keep the wretched things on the road. I'm absolutely stunned Peter likes them. The only good thing on the car was the hydrolastic suspension. Crude out dated engine, terrible build quality. Awful interior. Absolutely horrendous conveyance. It's worth remembering this is the car BL hoped would resurrect the brand. At the same time Peugeot was in the sht, big French cars were not selling in numbers, the 104 was crp, they too were looking at going under, the car that saved Peugeot? The 205. Like bloody chalk and cheese. Dad often says a second class drive is better than a first class walk, ID rather get fit than drive a metro. They were the first ever panda car I got to drive, you could throw em around all over the place and they got a right thrashing and still kept coming back from workshops for more.........except fleet No.47214.........that didnt come back...........Andy Knott killed it.....RIP 47214

I have owned 2 Metros, A BRG 'MG' and a white MG turbo that had lost it's decals and looked like your granny's. Neither of them caused me any mechanical grief and the Q-car turbo was seriously fun.

Just remembered I had use of a mates Montego Turbo for a couple of months, half a lifetime ago. It had had some 'work' done, my mate was a bit of a engine tragic and spent ALL his spare time doing stupid things with engines, any engine, in the garage, his day job was building aero engines, he liked engines. Seriously quick off the line but borderline unmanageable around corners/roundabouts but looked stock and embarrassed many a 944/Quattro owner.

PS, dust shouldn't be an issue for you this weekend

What a fantastic fabricator and inventive engineer that Nik Blackhurst is, I am full of admiration for this guys capabilities of finding the best solutions for whatever problem comes up during the build. Also the jig he build before starting to tackle the job was a very smart idea. This man is a genius. Peter.

Ah well Gazza one of the reasons I like them is, in the recruiting office in Dumfries we had a modified metro van it was a trial vehicle for the K series engine, we were a high mileage user so were picked for this trial. A normal week would see 1000 miles clocked up and as it had the 1400 engine it was quick to say the least and very popular with us recruiters. I was coming back one sunny day from Edinburgh through the Beeftubs which is a lovely twisty road with high sides, I came across a Toyota Supra who while going quick was holding me up so I pushed him a bit, he took the bait and on the straights was leaving me [not as fast as you would think], but on the bends of which there are plenty I was glued to his bumper!! After a few minutes he slowed and let me pass and then did the same to me, however after the second or third bend he was up the verge so gave up the chase! Now the Toyota was a 3 litre turbo and its doors were well and truly blown off by what was badged as a 1 litre Metro, bet he wasnt bragging about it in the pub that night? So you have to have respect for this little car that didnt do anything great but wasnt bad, provide good fuel consumption and could handle when pushed

So you have to have respect for this little car that didnt do anything great but wasnt bad, provide good fuel consumption and could handle when pushed I wasn't including the later and slightly better K series engined ones, The GTa wasnt a bad little car, despite being underpinned by something designed in the mid 70's. I was scarred for life from an early age with the Metro, my aunt had a biege 1.0L HLE that wouldnt get passed 45MPH with her at the wheel - the words 'Go with your Aunty Beryl so she doesnt get lost' used to fill me with utter dread! Later on when i started driving a friend of a friend had a fixation with the damn things, no amount of idiotic driving around MK could convince me an A series metro was a useful car. All that before you mention the word RUST! Little known fact by most people, the much maligned MGF used Metro subframes.
