My engine doesn't have an air filter. It just has a metal intake, bit like a funnel. If I can't start it then (Vetus dealer 5 miles from here) do I just need to blast a load of heat into the filterless intake? Do I need to go easy on this, or just blast away with the blowtorch? Yes, within reason you can't harm it.

Not so fast Rubber Ducky. The following will manifest itself over time. Difficult starting can also be attributed to wide valve clearances, the cause of which could be wear to the valve gear or camshaft, easy to diagnose as it will rattle like bollox. The Nippon type inline pump on that engine is largely self bleeding, slight air leaks in the fuel system will make starting harder as it has to prime prior to starting, opening the rack fully can help but doesn't solve the issue. Lower compression due to a worn engine will also make itself well known, increased oil consumption along with visible smoke. Those little twins are tough little units, if be highly surprised if there is a big bill on this. That said, those type of injector pumps are either cheap as chips to sort or are eye wateringly expensive to repair.

Black smoke= blocked air filter, faulty injector or faulty injector pump in order of cuntiness. No, overload of fuel on starting.

I've owned my boat, powered by the little Vetus m2.04, for 4 years. I've always started the engine on about 1/4 throttle. It's always started straight away, no problems. Today it coughed and spluttered for a couple of seconds then died. Tried again, same thing happened. More throttle, same thing happened. Full throttle, it threw out a fair bit of black smoke for a few seconds, then ran as normal. I switched off and left it for an hour, the same things happened again. Fuel filter changed 50 hours ago. I undid the bleed bolt on top of the fuel filter assembly, fuel flowed as it should. Any ideas what's going on? Those symptoms point to either dirty fuel (muck and/or water collecting in the bottom of a/the filter bowl/body), or air getting into the FI system somewhere between the tank and the injection pump, or pumps. * Does this engine have 2 x single element jerk pumps - like Listers have - or a two element in-line pump ? * Is it a gravity feed fuel system, or is it fitted with a lift pump ? * How many filters and/or sediment traps does the fuel pass through between leaving the tank and reaching the injector pump(s) ?

It may well not have one..... The chances of a bird or mouse taking up residence in the filter if it does have one is vanishingly small. Ricco says this has developed recently. Odds on its not the air filter (if fitted) I've replaced absolutely filthy filters on engines that started absolutely perfectly. Go and have a yorkie and lob your Haynes manual on the fire 👍 It's up to Ricco to sort the wheat from the chaff on this thread. My personal recommendation is that if his boat is fitted with an air filter then the very first step should be to temporarily remove the filter element and see if the engine starting improves. vince you really should try reading what's been written before posting, ricco has said his engine doesn't have an air filter.

As usual, you've missed the point and the irony entirely. I took exception to your reply to Mr stabbysociopathsouthernstar because you never fail to get a kick in when we have a collective Beatdown on certain members, and its always members you've had previous spats with. Usually members that joked about your poo-in-a-box collection. You do realise if you'd laughed the initial comments off, nothing more would have been said? You take yourself way too seriously.

Would you like the box?? moegreen, as a new member, or a sockpuppet of a member, I'm sure that the OP will be very happy with your solution to his problem. If all you want to do is informing Kris of your kindness, send him a private message instead. That could also avoid other members getting jealous of your kind offer to only one member. I was just reading your other postings that aren't very interesting either. It may be too difficult for you, but aren't there more useful things for you to do then only polluting a forum ? Have a nice day anyway. Peter.

Is this a Vetus with the cylindrical electric fuel pump? If so was the filter in the end changed when the main filter(s) were?
