What timber is used to make lock gates?
might seem a bit of a stupid question but a mate asked me and I didn't know the answer.

I don't think they are all oak. There are some lock gates made of Ekki/Azobe and I'm sure a few other tropical timbers are used these days as well.
Its my belief that use of some low quality imported timber is the cause of some of the problems with locks deteriorating.

I'd be surprised if any lock gates were made of Azobe, although happy to be proved wrong. I certainly wouldn't want to manually move a lock gate that is made from Azobe.

Might just have been the balance beams but I was told that the wood was ekki (aka azobe) when some gates were being done on the K&A in 2001. I had some offcuts (from lateral beams on the gates) for the fire and it was very very heavy. I dropped a piece in the cut and it sank like a stone.

Thanks for the replies. I have 10 raised beds using reclaimed Azobe sleepers - lifting and working with the wood was an experience that I'll not bother with again... Some of the tropical hardwoods are really hard!

Thanks all. My mate is a woodworker, mainly wood turning but he's been asked to make some faux lock gates by a client, I'll pass on your information.

I have my moments. Keep a look out for our pics of our trip, that sort of thing might be OK for you (?). Thinking of putting a set up once a week, say on Saturday evenings so people have Sunday morning to browse through the story. 1100 photos to wade through in raw form at the moments, loaded onto computer and starting to 'make the list' today.
