Finding my way around new boat - surveys are for sissies. Hopefully not just the first of many questions! Victron multi plus 12/2500/120. Mains sockets only work with the charger switched on. Inverter is off. The victron switch is 3 way - on/off/charger only.

If you are plugged into a shoreline, you should get mains ifvthd switch is either set to inverter or charger only. If not on shoreline then you should only get mains if set to inverter.

The strange thing (to me) is on shoreline I have no mains without switching the charger on. The batteries are foobarred, I'd like my fridge to work (240) and sockets for some DIY without the charger trying to charge the knackered batteries.

You can't do that with the Victron due to the internal transfer switch and the power assist feature. If you are confident with mains then if you remove the front cover you will see the mains input and output connections at the bottom left. Just disconnect them from panel and join them together, colour to colour, using a bit of heavy duty choc block. This is what I had to do when my transfer switch failed. MAKE SURE THE SHORELINE IS DISCONNECTED FIRST!

This is just the way Combis work. Which is fine on a normal boat with operative batteries. Maybe you can change the DIP switches to limit the charge current to a low value. Or just get new batteries!

Thank you all. Nothing amiss is a fair result! I need batteries anyway so this is the easiest way forward.
But how many... It has a travel power that will work the washing machine, the charger is 120a, 540ah of batteries, 2500 inverter...Nice to have, but I'm feeling a bit over-specced. Anything I would need all those batteries and inverter for I'd run on the travelpower. That leaves lights and two pumps. I've happily got by for a year with 1 x 10+ year old 200ah battery which I think has lost half it's capacity. Maybe I really only need one small battery and perhaps another for luck. Would I need to limit the max charge current?
