Anybody got one? Any good? If so, what's better, a belt or a shoulder sling?

I haven't got one. They make you look a right nob. Whilst holding a windlass and climbing a ladder etc is a slight pain, having straps and metal things dangling is a recipe for it getting caught on something at an innoportune moment. Unless you are into bondage and slings of course.

I've never used one, but I will do when we eventually find a boat we like. I usually tuck the Windlass through the back belt loop on my jeans if I'm on my own.

I made a couple of belt loops out of car seat belt, folded into a loop for the aluminium windlass and one for the belt, sewn on sewing machine. It goes out of the way behind / aside my right hip. I also have a dedicated belt I just pop on over whatever. BW key on a clip, small tool/pliers/penknife gadget in a pouch, which, by chance has a "tube" down the back of it which just takes a handcuff key, on a lanyard. I'm so used to it it feels wrong if the windlass isn't put back, so I don't forget it. Bit like wearing a seat belt, you notice when it's not there. My Mr Stabby sheath knife I keep just inside the slide, along with the rat knobbler aka CnH handspike, for deterring unwanted guests natch! I keep meaning to get a panga for "clearing vegetation" but not come across one yet.

Never had one, or wanted one, or seen a need for one to be honest. But I never carry a phone when boating, and I don't smoke, so two hands and one windlass has always seemed a good match. Each to their own. If you get one, make sure it's blue.....for a boy Rog

Climbing up ladders with a windlass - we have been thinking of working out how to carry the windlass. Not sure yet. Willing to try sling/belt. You really need two hands for ladders. www.daveonanon.com/originalholster.html - (how do these things stop the windlass from falling out?)

Top tip though, don't leave it on the floor by the bottom gate and try and hustle a nuisance shiny sea otter that had been holding you up all the way down the Northampton arm. I lost my favourite windlass, gormless git on the sea otter lost a bit of paint and very nearly lost a window, he also lost the Westbridge challenge to me too ⚓🚢👍 If looks could kill at the awards presentation

I stick my windlass in the front of my trousers (with a belt on). I'm thin and the windlass is a very old and quite light forged iron single socket one so it is easy to handle and fits in my trousers happily. I was told not to put a windlass in the back of a belt or in a sling mounted at the back because of the potential damage it could cause to the spinal cord if you fall backwards onto the windlass, for example if you slipped when pushing against a balance beam. I think this was sound advice. There is less chance of damage in the front due to the shape of the skeleton. I think the leather slings are a bit silly but each to their own

I find a lot of windlasses in locks. I don't know exactly what people are doing with them (oh to be a fly on the lock wall) but they do drop 'em !!
