Bit of a rant but I wish the media would stop including me when they report on the anniversary if Diana's, I didn't know her on any level and while her death was sad so were the deaths of all the others that passed on the same day. So only some of Britain cried and didn't include me. Phil

I agree with that totally Phil.
I remember I was working at the time of her funeral and someone said to me "aren't you going ? or at least aren't you going to watch it on the television ?" They were horrified when I said "why should I ? I didn't know much about her, and the little I did made me not like her very much, so why the hell would I want to go to her funeral"

Most of us colonials are intriged with anything to do about the Royals. I remember I stayed up to about 4 in the morning the night she died listening to the news. Worked the day of the funeral so wasn't able to watch it on tv.
Although I was interested, I didn't shed a tear. Felt bad for her sons, as with anyone that young; it's too young to loose a parent. But still didn't shed a tear.

The worst thing was when the horrible Mickey Mouse (i typed e l t o n j o h n but for some reason my phone edited it !!??) modified the candle in the shit song to adapt it to the princess of landmines. The original was about Billy Jean King (Marilyn Monroe) and a reasonable well constructed winge. To alter it to refer to someone else was so grim it's just beyond explanation. Or was it the $$$$$?

I was staying on a campsite in North Wales when I heard the news, normal day followed until I started the 5 hour solo drive home - how the car radio survived should be subject to a thesis...

Somehow an earlier generation managed to survive a world war, with the associated appalling loss of life, without such an embarrassing display of self indulgent, maudlin, and distasteful grief.
The day our 'stiff upper lip' and any pretence to one, died.

I didn't find out Princess Diana had died until three weeks afterwards when I was on the Calais-Dover ferry. On the day she died I would have been on the road somewhere between Moscow and the Lada factory in Toliatti and completely out of touch with domestic matters. I bought a newspaper on the ferry and read "There cannot be a person in the whole of Europe who has not heard about the tragic death of Princess Diana" and I thought "What, has she died?"

I cried on the morning I heard Princess Died. And then I went home and had baked beans on toast for lunch. That cheered me up a bit.
