I worked with a retired sergeant-major from one of the guards regiments who met her at the yearly re-unions on 3 separate occasions. He said that on the last two occasions she came up to him and remembered his name and some of what they had spoken about the previous year.
Whatever else she was, she was a remarkable woman, and had that personal touch that is so lacking in most of the aristocracy. For me, it was a sad day.
On the other hand, the royals (the Queen Mother most likely) couldn't countenance her continued existence on this planet. I would love to have seen inside Philip's head as he walked behind the coffin with the princes.
