For the life of me I can't remember the names of the rust inhibitors you paint on surfaces.
Something like vectron and factron?
I understand one you can paint over, the other has to be thoroughly washed off.
Sure someone can put me out of my misery please.

Yep, that's the one you paint over isn't it?
Rog
ETA Just googled, and Fertan is painted/sprayed on rust, and becomes a base coat for paint

Thanks magnetman for the Fertan answer.
Armed with that I found the other brand on google, which is Vactan.
Any recommendations which is best?
Out for blacking shorty and time to do the gunnels again. Used Kurust by Hammerite in the past, but I have been told these products are better.

according to the instructions on the container Fertan should be washed off before overpainting.
I have also used "Flag" rust converter (from machine mart) that does not need washing off.
I have used Fertan in a couple of places on Sabina before keelblack (virtually no rust below waterline that needed treatment.) because it was recommended by them.
On my decks I have been using the Flag rust converter followed by red oxide followed by gloss. I have used this effectively for a couple of years on small areas, this is the first time on a major section (joint between tank top and deck after serious chipping)

Genolite was fairly useful stuff if my memory serves me right.

Too cryptic for a simple Yorkshire lad.
That's the Plough (Drinking Gourd in America).
I'm missing something.

I'm going to vote for vactan. It's exspensive but it seems to do the job. It's a good surface to paint over. There are places on my boat where I've used it and the rust hasn't come back through in four or five years. So I always use it outside and in on the hull.

I used fertan under the keelblack, it was reccomended by keelblack. Paint on, wash off after 24hrs IMMSMR. Fertan smells delicious. it's tannic acid, condensed tea, no I didn't taste it. I'm very happy with the keelblack so far too. easy to apply, quick to dry.
