These sides around our drains were treated very liberally with Fertan 2 years ago. Then painted on top. Two years later rusty again - Fertan doesn't work. This time I scaped all the rust away with a sharp cold chisel and slapped red oxide on - let's see how that goes. I shan't be buying Fertan again - wot a swizz.

I use a stuff called Aquasteel which is Phosphoric Acid in a latex carrier which goes on white so you can see where you have treated but dries clear and is a perfect base for paint. Phosphoric acid changes ferrous oxide (rust) into ferrous phosphate, there are several phosphoric acid based treatments on the market. You don't have to wash them off but you must remove most of the rust present . Phil

I suspect some of the amateur automotive rust treatments may be Vactan or very similar. The ones that say when they dry they provide a primes surface. Like Kurust and Hammerite Rust Beater.

Contacted Performance Chemicals Ltd who produce Vactan.
Only available on line, on ebay or direct from them.
Too late for us, we'll have to pick something else up, but maybe in the future.

Red oxide. Available in any DIY/hardware store. Bob's yer uncle. Oh, a paintbrush might be handy, unless you want to smear it on with your fingers.

Got the red oxide, got the wire brushes and sanders etc. Got the primer and gloss too. The rust inhibitor is just a security blanket really. I think Neil Young is right Rog

I just used some Jenolite on a towing bracket, and was surprised to see that it is still based on phosphoric acid, i.e. the real thing. In the good old days (70's) I used Trustan which stained your skin like blackcurrant juice and turned rusty steel a shiny black within 24 hours, I believe it was the strongest form of phosphoric acid available at the time. Of course these days the elfinsafety blokes won't let you buy it.
AFAIK Vactan and Fertan are based on tannic acid, hence the name. I've had good results with Vactan, which seems to form an acrylic base for painting, whilst fertan seems to be just a wash that doesn't leave any residue. You can also get an agricultural product called milkstone remover, which I believe is just diluted phosphoric acid and is cheap as chips.

You can buy very strong phosphoric acid on ebay, skunk farmers use it to control the acidity of their growing medium. It's easiest on horizontal surfaces as you can keep it wet.
