I should post a picture of this really but don't know how to, or even take one with my phone, so I'll describe it the best I can. I need to adapt my tiller as the footrest on my motorbike interferes with it when I try to put the tiller on full lock. Near the bottom of the tiller there's a wider section 3-4 inches long, looks like it's a tube welded at both ends. If I could do away with this tube, have the tiller the same width all the way up, my problem would be solved. I was wondering whether this tube might just be decorative, or is it more likely that the tiller was made in 2 pieces, this tube joins them together? I could grind away the bit of the wider tube that's in the way but that would be time consuming and messy.
Any ideas on this one?

Sounds to me like it's two pieces and someone's used an external sleeve. You could remove this and rejoin using an internal sleeve instead.

Seems a bit unusual. I wonder if the tiller had been snapped off and repaired previously? Without a photo its a bit awkward to visualise it.
Maybe its visible of Mrs Tabby's photo of your boat the other day when you had the engine out?

I'd just have it cut out and get a new piece of tubular steel section welded in instead.
